This release of Catalyst™ introduces support for 12X and 24X Anti-Aliasing for the ATI Radeon™ HD 2900 XT, and ATI Radeon™ HD 2600 Series. These new Anti-Aliasing settings are available through the new Anti-Aliasing Edge Detect Filter. Folding@Home is a distributed computing project designed by the Stanford University. The application performs intensive simulations of protein folding. Es wurde bestimmt wieder gaaanz viel am CCC für Linux gefeilt...
Naja, dann kann ich ja gleich meinen 38er drauflassen, wenn sich sowieso nix ändert.

Aber die Kunden, die sich jetzt mir ihrer Politik verprellen, können ihnen in Zukunft noch verdammt weh tun. Den Schrott, der hier abgeliefert wird, vergisst man nicht so schnell. Und ich für meinen Teil kann auf absehbare Zeit nur allen von ATI-Produkten abraten.

Das weiß der Geier...
Hat aber sicher wieder mit dem CCC zu tun.
Ich glaub damit wollen die nur vom eigentlichen Problem ablenken.

Im Grunde gibt es nur 3 Sachen, die wirklich eine große Ankündigung wären:
- Die Veröffentlichung der Sourcen unter GPL und/oder Freigabe von Dokumentationen
- Vollständige Unterstützung für AIGLX und Xegl
- Anständige Performance

Hab ich was vergessen? Ich glaub nicht.
Und solange diese Punkte nicht angegangen werden, wird so ziemlich jeder Treiber
nur ein Aufguss sein.

Und warum kannst Du allen von ATi Produkten abraten? Nur weil ein verschwindend geringer Prozentsatz keinen besseren Linuxtreiber bekommt?

Ich würde mal sagen, dass verallgemeinerst Du ein bisschen zu doll. Ich rate ja auch nicht jedem von NV Karten ab, nur weil die Treiber (für Windows) in letzter Zeit auch nicht mehr das sind, was sie mal waren...

Jupp, so seh ich das auch. Sich über den Linux-Treiber dermaßen aufzuregen können halt nur Linuxer. Und die interessieren AMD/ATI zur Zeit wohl weniger. Die Firma hat andere Probleme zu lösen.

Ich hatte einmal unter Windows mit ATI zu tun und hab ich damals sehr über die Treiber
geärgert, aber gut, sowas kann vorkommen, das hat mich nicht aus der Bahn gebracht.

Der Linuxtreiber hingegen ist schon eine ganz andere Kategorie von Ärgernis.
Ich hab mein Notebook jetzt ca. ein 3/4 Jahr und ich hatte schon so viele Probleme
mit diesem Treiber und 80-90% der Probleme, die ich unter Linux hatte waren entweder
auf den ATI Treiber oder auf den WLAN Treiber zurückzuführen (welcher aber auch
noch eher Alpha/Beta Status hat).

Oder, um es andersrum auszudrücken: Wäre der ATI Treiber besser hätte ich fast
keine Probleme unter Linux gehabt, bzw. nur eine größere Baustelle, nämlich WLAN.

Mit Nvidia Treibern hab ich auch Erfahrung, unter Windows hatte ich damt eigentlich nie
Probleme (auch nicht mit meiner 8800GTS jetzt) und ebenso unter Linux, abgesehen
davon, dass ich über portage mal versehentlich einen Treiber für eine GF6 installiert
hab und übersehen habe, dass der nur mit GF8 funktioniert. Aber da kann natürlich
Nvidia nix dafür. Aber mag sein, dass es da andere gibt, die mehr Probleme haben,
das kann ich allerdings nicht beurteilen.

Das glaub ich gern, und das ist auch nicht positiv für AMD/ATI. Mir gings nur darum darzustellen, warum in diesem Release nichts für den Linuxtreiber gemacht wurde und auch das nur, weil sich darüber wieder echauffiert wurde als wäre es der Untergang der bekannten Welt.

Es ist der Untergang.
Das hat jetzt weniger mit dem Release zu tun, als vier mit den letzten 5-10 Releases
(genau gezählt hab ich nich), in denen sich fast gar nix getan hat, wenn man von der
Einführung des CCC mal absieht. Hier und da wurde mal ein Bug gefixt, aber meistens
so, dass es für 80% der Leute bereinigt war, für den Rest aber immer noch besteht
(z.B. das Switchen auf die Virtuelle Konsole ist anscheinende seit 5 Releases gefixt,
taucht aber trotzdem noch immer wieder auf.)
Es ist also eher ein stetiger Untergang. Man hofft mit jedem Release, dass sich endlich
mal so richtig was tut und wird dann halt immer wieder aufs neue enttäuscht.

Übrigens, wenn AMD/ATI nicht die Mittel haben, den Treiber ordentlich (weiterzu)-entwickeln,
dann sollen sie doch die Sourcen freigeben, inkl. Doku, da kommt bestimmt einiges
an Mannskraft zusammen, um daraus einen guten Treiber zu machen.
Natürlich geht auch das nicht von heute auf morgen, aber es wäre ein Anfang.
Leider muss man da auch als AMD Fanboy ja immer ein wenig in Richtung Intel schielen.

Das ist nicht erst seit den letzten 10 Releases, sondern seit ATI die Entwicklungsabteilung in Starnberg aufgelöst hat. Die Linux-Treiber waren nie wirklich von besonderer Qualität, aber seit der Schließung von Starnberg wurde es praktisch mit jeder Version schlimmer. Wie lange hat ATI gebraucht, um 64bit-Treiber rauszubringen? Wie lange dauert es, bis eine neue X.Org-Version unterstützt wird? Neue Kernelversionen wurden eher von freiwilligen Programmierern unterstützt, welche per trial & error das Kernelmodul darauf zum compilieren bewegt haben, denn von ATI. Support-Anfragen verschwinden im Nirvana. Es werden monatelang neue Treiberversionen versprochen, die ewig nicht kommen.
Ich habe ATI damals wirklich lange die Stange gehalten, darauf gehofft, dass es wieder besser wird. Aber es wurde nur schlimmer mit der Zeit. Deshalb sah ich mich auch gezwungen, ATI den Rücken zu kehren. ATI sieht Linux als Nischenmarkt an, in dem man die User nach Strich und Faden verarschen kann. Natürlich, welchen Beitrag leisten denn Linux-Nutzer schon zum Umsatz von ATI bei? Aber das wird kaum dauerhaft so bleiben. Und die Nutzer, die heute derart verarscht werden, werden morgen nicht zurück gerannt kommen. Zerstören kann man Vertrauen relativ schnell, aber neues Vertrauen gewinnen, ist sehr schwer. Und ATI hat in den letzten Jahren verdammt viel Vertrauen zerstört.

Mir reicht's jetzt dann auch mit den Linux-Treibern, bzw.: die gibt es ja eigentlich nicht. Wenn sich der Browser aufhängt, weil irgendein Werbe-Popup ein Video zeigt, dann tut der Treiber halt einfach nicht. Video-Overlay tut nicht; OpenGL tut nur manchmal (GoogleEarth läuft auf 32-, nicht aber 64-Bit und dgl.); die Fernsehkarte durfte ihre Bilder das letzte Mal mit der RV410-Karte richtig zeigen. Warum heizt meine Karte unter Linux im Leerlauf, als wäre sie unter Vollast (mit dem 'offiziellen'/ fglrx-Treiber)? Monate hat es gedauert, bis der Treiber überhaupt wieder installierbar war ('framebuffer-bug').

Anderthalb Jahre Gezerre der Art - mir ist das mehr als genug; das ist nicht mehr nachzuvollziehen. Statt Fehlerbereinigungen kommen neue Fehler dazu ('video tearing').

Es geht übrigens nicht darum, daß ATi die Sourcen veröffentlicht; es geht um die Spezifikationen des Hardware-Interfaces der jeweiligen Karte/ des jeweiligen Chips. Daß sie die Sourcen ihrer Treiber wegen Verwendung proprietärer Komprimierungsverfahren usw. usf. nicht veröffentlichen können, das ist ja noch einzusehen; daß sie die Hardware-Spezifikationen nicht herausgeben, nicht. Ich jedenfalls kann es nicht einsehen. Mit den 4x0-Chips hat es doch auch noch geklappt. Stecken finstere Geheimnisse in den Spezifikationen?

Ach ja: Nur Linux-Nutzer ärgern sich über schlechte Linux-Treiber; das ist schon klar. Unter den Linux-Nutzern wird es aber - leider - immer weniger ATi-Karten-Besitzer geben; und das ist wirklich schade.

Ich bekomm echt n Fön.

Der zweite Treiber, bei dem am crossfire-Support nix gemacht wurde.
Lediglich die "sims.icd" ist dazugekommen.

Nein, auch die Sourcen sollten veröffentlicht werden, zumindest wäre das die deutlich
bessere Lösung. Allerdings sollte man das CCC sowie aticonfig etc. abspalten (im Prinzip
sollte das auch jetzt schon so sein). Das bräuchte man auch nicht unbedingt Open Source
machen, aber man kann es ja weiter liefern.
Das das Ganze möglich ist zeigt ja Intel, dort werde Spezifikationen geliefert und es wurden
die Sourcen veröffentlicht, zudem wird auch noch aktiv mitgearbeitet.
Da kann man als ATI User wirklich neidisch werden.

Mit den 4x0-Chips hat es doch auch noch geklappt. Stecken finstere Geheimnisse in den Spezifikationen?

Natürlich ist das eine Möglichkeit, aber wenn ich ehrlich bin glaube ich weniger, dass
sie es nicht können, sondern einfach nicht wollen. Und bis mir jemand was anderes
belegt, werde ich bei der Meinung auch bleiben, denn von AMD/ATI hört man ja zu
dem Thema nur alle 10 Jahre mal was und auch dann nur in total verschleierten
Aussagen, wo irgend ein Blogger mal wieder was reininterpretiert hat.

@Puck: Über die älteren Releases kann ich natürlich keine Aussage machen, da ich
damals ja noch keine ATI Graka hatte.

Die Kinder haben Ferien ...apropos Linux (Ubuntu), ich könnte dir da jede Menge neue Geschichten aus dem Reich des mystischen Linuxuriens erzählen, bei denen du dich bestimmt gleich voll freudiger Aufregung direkt wieder auf die Suche nach den größten
Antwortfonts begeben wirst...

Aber seid gestern läuft bei mir Ubuntu 7.04 x86-64 endlich so wie soll .. sogar mit den in der Distribution angebotenen Xorg-Ati-Treibern ... allerdings weiß ich immer noch nicht WIESO, denn als ich es eingerichtet und online auf den neuesten Stand gebracht habe, wollte es irgendwie garnicht: 1680x1050 per DVI erkennen oder einstellen? No way kenn wa nich! Woll wa nich! Sound? Haste doch! Wie du hörst nix? Taub wa?!
Tausendmal die xorg.conf editiert, den XServer und auch Rechner neu gestartet, Linuxforen abgegrast ... immer war bei der 1280x1024er Option Schluß. In Gedanken PuckPoltergeist verflucht und 4 Tage kein Linux mehr angefaßt, am 5. Tag mal wieder testweise hochgefahren und es geschah eine wundersame Selbstheilung
(Dieses Phenomän hatten übrigens eine leidgeprüfte Schreiber im forum.ubuntuusers.de. Nix ging, tage später geschah das Wunder des heiligen Linus ...hehe)
Das mit dem Sound war nur eine mit der 7.04er eingeführte Vermurxung der Mixer-Defaulteinstellung. Die Soundausgabe stand per Default auf digital. Warum auch immer? Bei der 6.10er war das richtig vorkonfiguriert.
Jedenfalls läuft jetzt erstmal alles soweit (Audio, Video, 3D, PowerNow! vom Opteron) und ich bin für den Moment recht zufrieden damit.

PS: Was ist eigentlich Nvidia? Ich habe dieses komische Wort öfter gehört...

Hoffentlich werden die bald mal auf irgendner Linuxveranstaltung oder was weis ich dafür ausgebuht... kann's ja nicht sein, dass man Linuxuser so vernachlässigt. Angekündigt, dass se an der Situation was ändern wollen haben sie ja schon, kam nur noch nix dabei raus.

Mir scheint nämlich, so nach und nach relativieren sich die anfänglichen Unterschiede (Stromverbrauch, Performance) gegenüber NV...

Der 8.39.4 wurde stillschweigend zurückgezogen.

Ja, ist wegen des "AMD Watermark Issue"s zurückgezogen worden... hatten wir noch gar nicht erwähnt...

Ich habe mir dem Treiber Probleme unter Vista 64bit mit gewissen 3D Programmen unter anderem rthdribl. rthdribl startet kurz und bleibt dann stehen auch 3DMark05 bleibt in den letzen Benches "hängen" und reagiert nicht, Mit der vorgänger version 7.6 läuft es ohne Probleme.
