AMD’s Mike Wolfe Named Transformational CIO by The Enterprise CIO Forum

Wolfe Manages One of the World’s Largest Private Clouds Running on More than 123,000 AMD Opteron™ Processor Cores

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- 6/7/2012

AMD (NYSE: AMD) announced today that Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer Mike Wolfe is the inaugural 2012 honoree of the Transformational CIO Award, which recognizes leading-edge CIOs. Wolfe was recognized by The Enterprise CIO Forum for his pioneering approach to the strategic use of IT to transform AMD’s business by reducing costs, increasing efficiency and bolstering productivity. Wolfe, who has overseen a significant and successful consolidation of AMD’s worldwide data centers, uses AMD technology for the company’s engineering development and support infrastructure, including managing cloud computing solutions running on more than 123,000 AMD Opteron™ processor cores.1

“CIOs increasingly need to balance the realities of today with the possibilities of tomorrow – and one of their biggest challenges is how to integrate and streamline cloud services within their organizations,” said Rory Read, president and CEO, AMD. “I congratulate Mike on this award, which recognizes him as an exceptional leader who, while overseeing one of the planet’s largest cloud infrastructures, is helping drive AMD’s mission to become more agile while successfully executing our innovative product roadmaps and business plans.”

Transforming the company’s IT infrastructure, AMD’s private cloud has delivered significant savings through in-place upgrades, expanded base compute resource capacity by more than 20 percent, and increased server utilization rates by more than 90 percent. With the added computing power, AMD’s private cloud has equipped teams to increase productivity, collaboration and efficiency, as projects that used to take weeks are now taking only a few days. For example, one team working on the “Bobcat” x86 processor core in August 2010 was able to complete two months of testing in five days.

“I am honored to receive this recognition, especially as it is so closely tied to AMD’s efforts with the cloud and consolidation,” said Wolfe. “AMD’s private cloud is truly a showcase of the greatest benefits of cloud computing technology for businesses: flexibility, increased efficiency and hardware cost-saving through a strong focus on standardization across platforms.”

Wolfe also leads AMD’s Security Architecture Team, which is responsible for embedding key security technologies in AMD’s products. He also oversees AMD’s Information Security Team, which is responsible for protecting the company’s infrastructure and corporate assets. Wolfe’s more than 30 years of industry experience includes leadership roles at HP, Motorola and Freescale spanning hardware, software and firmware engineering and the management of software development tools.

In a presentation at the upcoming AMD Fusion Developer Summit 2012, June 11-14 in Bellevue, WA, Wolfe will describe AMD’s vision to advance computing security and address the industry inflection points around cloud, consumerization of IT and persistent security threats by enhancing AMD’s existing security technologies.
