San\u00adta Cla\u00adra, Calif. August 26, 2019 <\/strong>\u2013 GLOBALFOUNDRIES<\/span> (GF<\/span>), the world\u2019s lea\u00adding spe\u00adcial\u00adty foundry based in the United Sta\u00adtes, today filed mul\u00adti\u00adple lawsuits in the U.S. and Ger\u00adma\u00adny alle\u00adging that semi\u00adcon\u00adduc\u00adtor manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adring tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies used by Tai\u00adwan Semi\u00adcon\u00adduc\u00adtor Manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adring Com\u00adpa\u00adny Ltd. (TSMC<\/span>) inf\u00adrin\u00adge 16 GF<\/span> patents.  The lawsuits were filed today in the U.S. Inter\u00adna\u00adtio\u00adnal Trade Com\u00admis\u00adsi\u00adon (ITC<\/span>), the U.S. Fede\u00adral Dis\u00adtrict Courts in the Dis\u00adtricts of Dela\u00adware and the Wes\u00adtern Dis\u00adtrict of Texas, and the Regio\u00adnal Courts of Dus\u00adsel\u00addorf and Mann\u00adheim in Germany.<\/p>\n

In fil\u00ading the lawsuits, GF<\/span> seeks orders that will pre\u00advent semi\u00adcon\u00adduc\u00adtors pro\u00addu\u00adced with the inf\u00adrin\u00adging tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgy by Tai\u00adwan-based TSMC<\/span>, the domi\u00adnant semi\u00adcon\u00adduc\u00adtor manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adrer, from being impor\u00adted into the U.S. and Ger\u00adma\u00adny. The\u00adse lawsuits requi\u00adre GF<\/span> to name cer\u00adtain major cus\u00adto\u00admers of TSMC<\/span> and down\u00adstream elec\u00adtro\u00adnics com\u00adpa\u00adnies, who, in most cases, are the actu\u00adal importers of the pro\u00adducts that incor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adte the inf\u00adrin\u00adging TSMC<\/span> tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgy. GF<\/span> also seeks signi\u00adfi\u00adcant dama\u00adges from TSMC<\/span> based on TSMC<\/span>\u2019s unlawful use of GF<\/span>\u2019s pro\u00adprie\u00adta\u00adry tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgy in its tens of bil\u00adli\u00adons of dol\u00adlars of sales.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>While semi\u00adcon\u00adduc\u00adtor manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adring has con\u00adtin\u00adued to shift to Asia, GF<\/span> has bucked the trend by inves\u00adt\u00ading hea\u00advi\u00adly in the Ame\u00adri\u00adcan and Euro\u00adpean semi\u00adcon\u00adduc\u00adtor indus\u00adtries, spen\u00adding more than $15 bil\u00adli\u00adon dol\u00adlars in the last deca\u00adde in the U.S. and more than $6 bil\u00adli\u00adon in Europe\u2019s lar\u00adgest semi\u00adcon\u00adduc\u00adtor manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adring fabri\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon faci\u00adli\u00adty.
