Des\u00adwe\u00adgen rufen wir alle User auf ihre CPU-Ker\u00adne aus zu packen und uns beim Dis\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adted Com\u00adpu\u00adting Pro\u00adjekt SETI<\/span>@Home zu unter\u00adst\u00fct\u00adzen, um den R\u00fcck\u00adstand von knapp 88 Mil\u00adlio\u00adnen Punk\u00adten auf das Team der Intel Cor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon zu reduzieren.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve work\u00aded at Berkeley\u2019s SETI<\/span> Rese\u00adarch Cen\u00adter for 25 years and co-foun\u00added SETI<\/span>@home. Thank you for your efforts as a mem\u00adber of the SETI<\/span>@home team in 2019. Our pro\u00adgram of sear\u00adching for intel\u00adli\u00adgent extra\u00adter\u00adrestri\u00adal life con\u00adti\u00adnues to expand, but SETI<\/span>@home still needs your help.<\/p>\n

We are put\u00adting the finis\u00adhing tou\u00adch\u00ades on our Nebu\u00adla soft\u00adware suite which will ana\u00adly\u00adze all results from both SETI<\/span>@home and SERENDIP<\/span> VI<\/span>. We are focu\u00adsing our first efforts on a com\u00adple\u00adte ana\u00adly\u00adsis of all SETI<\/span>@home Are\u00adci\u00adbo data to date. As you can ima\u00adgi\u00adne, it is dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to quan\u00adti\u00adfy the qua\u00adli\u00adty and sen\u00adsi\u00adti\u00advi\u00adty of our ana\u00adly\u00adsis given that the\u00adre are no known ETIs to use as a refe\u00adrence! So part of the design of Nebu\u00adla is to gene\u00adra\u00adte a lar\u00adge num\u00adber of syn\u00adthe\u00adtic ETI-like signals, cal\u00adled bir\u00addies. Our set of bir\u00addies ran\u00adges from tho\u00adse that model sta\u00adtio\u00adna\u00adry trans\u00admit\u00adters on far off pla\u00adnets to trans\u00admit\u00adters orbi\u00adting around a varie\u00adty of pla\u00adnet types. We are also loo\u00adking into using machi\u00adne lear\u00adning for anoma\u00adly detection.<\/p>\n

Two major papers will come out of this ana\u00adly\u00adsis. One will be on SETI<\/span>@home as an instru\u00adment and the other will pre\u00adsent the ana\u00adly\u00adsis in detail.<\/p>\n

This year saw the fur\u00adther com\u00admis\u00adsio\u00adning and impro\u00adving of SERENDIP<\/span> VI<\/span> \/ FAST\u00adBurst, deploy\u00aded on the FAST<\/span> radio telescope in Chi\u00adna \u2014 now the lar\u00adgest on the pla\u00adnet. Our instru\u00adment is dual pur\u00adpo\u00adse, loo\u00adking for both ETI<\/span> and Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). FRBs are tran\u00adsi\u00adent radio pul\u00adses of short dura\u00adti\u00adon cau\u00adsed by some as yet unknown astro\u00adphy\u00adsi\u00adcal pro\u00adcess. During one exci\u00adting test\u00ading ses\u00adsi\u00adon we detec\u00adted repea\u00adting FRB<\/span> 121102, a rare repea\u00adting FRB<\/span>. The detec\u00adtion demons\u00adtra\u00adtes the sen\u00adsi\u00adti\u00advi\u00adty of our instru\u00adment as this faint signal is detec\u00adta\u00adble by very few telescopes\/instruments.<\/p>\n

We con\u00adti\u00adnue to obtain raw data from Berkeley\u2019s Breakth\u00adrough Lis\u00adten pro\u00adgram. At Green Bank, obser\u00adving is about to migra\u00adte from loo\u00adking at stars within our own gala\u00adxy to obser\u00adving other gala\u00adxies. Mean\u00adwhile, at Par\u00adkes, we will be sur\u00advey\u00ading the galac\u00adtic pla\u00adne. During this sur\u00advey the raw \u201cvol\u00adta\u00adge\u201d data from the telescope will be recor\u00added. The\u00adse data will be ide\u00adal for pro\u00adces\u00adsing by SETI<\/span>@home vol\u00adun\u00adteers like you.<\/p>\n

To accom\u00adplish our goals for next year, SETI<\/span>@home needs two things. First, we need you, and your fri\u00adends and fami\u00adly. Plea\u00adse spread the word about SETI<\/span>@home and encou\u00adra\u00adge peo\u00adp\u00adle to par\u00adti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adte. Second, SETI<\/span>@home needs the fun\u00adding to obtain the hard\u00adware and deve\u00adlop soft\u00adware requi\u00adred to hand\u00adle new data sources.<\/p>\n
