{"id":53951,"date":"2020-01-14T09:47:11","date_gmt":"2020-01-14T08:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.planet3dnow.de\/cms\/?p=53951"},"modified":"2020-01-14T09:47:11","modified_gmt":"2020-01-14T08:47:11","slug":"ecmwf-signs-contract-with-atos-for-new-supercomputer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.planet3dnow.de\/cms\/53951-ecmwf-signs-contract-with-atos-for-new-supercomputer\/","title":{"rendered":"<span class=\"caps\">ECMWF<\/span> signs contract with Atos for new supercomputer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"caps\">ECMWF<\/span> has signed a four-year con\u00adtract worth over 80 mil\u00adli\u00adon euros with Atos for the sup\u00adp\u00adly of its Bull\u00adSe\u00adqua\u00adna <span class=\"caps\">XH2000<\/span> supercomputer.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caps\">ECMWF<\/span>\u2019s Coun\u00adcil of Mem\u00adber Sta\u00adtes gave the Cent\u00adre the green light for the deal during its ses\u00adsi\u00adon in Decem\u00adber&nbsp;2019.<\/p>\n<p>The decis\u00adi\u00adon was taken after an inter\u00adna\u00adtio\u00adnal ten\u00adder pro\u00adcess in which bidders were asses\u00adsed against cri\u00adte\u00adria inclu\u00adding com\u00admit\u00adted per\u00adfor\u00admance, imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon plan, fle\u00adxi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty and risks, qua\u00adli\u00adty of tech\u00adni\u00adcal solu\u00adti\u00adon, envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal impact, qua\u00adli\u00adty of ser\u00advice pro\u00advi\u00adsi\u00adon and sup\u00adport, and&nbsp;price.<\/p>\n<p>The new sys\u00adtem will deli\u00adver an increase in sus\u00adtained per\u00adfor\u00admance by a fac\u00adtor of about five com\u00adpared to <span class=\"caps\">ECMWF<\/span>\u2019s cur\u00adrent high-per\u00adfor\u00admance com\u00adpu\u00adting facility.<\/p>\n<p>This will enable a ran\u00adge of advances:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>incre\u00adasing the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecmwf.int\/en\/about\/media-centre\/fact-sheet-ensemble-weather-forecasting\">ensem\u00adble fore\u00adcast<\/a>&nbsp;hori\u00adzon\u00adtal reso\u00adlu\u00adti\u00adon from a grid spa\u00adcing of 18 km to about 10&nbsp;km, which is expec\u00adted to signi\u00adfi\u00adcant\u00adly impro\u00adve fore\u00adcasts of near-sur\u00adface tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adtures and&nbsp;winds<\/li>\n<li>incre\u00adasing the ensem\u00adble fore\u00adcast ver\u00adti\u00adcal reso\u00adlu\u00adti\u00adon from 91 lay\u00aders to 137 lay\u00aders, in line with the cur\u00adrent high-reso\u00adlu\u00adti\u00adon forecast<\/li>\n<li>issuing exten\u00added-ran\u00adge fore\u00adcasts dai\u00adly rather than twice-weekly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The increased com\u00adpu\u00adting capa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty will also enable the Cent\u00adre to con\u00adti\u00adnue inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adti\u00adve work towards the 5&nbsp;km ensem\u00adble cal\u00adled for by its ten-year Stra\u00adtegy to 2025, and in the field of machi\u00adne lear\u00adning in nume\u00adri\u00adcal wea\u00adther prediction.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Firm footing for success\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>G\u00fcn\u00adther Tscha\u00adbusch\u00adnig, Con\u00adve\u00adner of the <span class=\"caps\">ECMWF<\/span> Tech\u00adni\u00adcal Advi\u00adso\u00adry Com\u00admit\u00adtee sub\u00adgroup respon\u00adsi\u00adble for sel\u00adec\u00adting the Centre\u2019s high-per\u00adfor\u00admance com\u00adpu\u00adting faci\u00adli\u00adty, empha\u00adsis\u00aded the bene\u00adfits of the deal with Atos for society.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>One can\u00adnot ove\u00adre\u00adsti\u00adma\u00adte the importance of accu\u00adra\u00adte wea\u00adther pre\u00addic\u00adtion. This has never been truer than in our cur\u00adrent age, as the effects of cli\u00adma\u00adte chan\u00adge are incre\u00adasing\u00adly felt. Indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adals and socie\u00adties need ever grea\u00adter amounts of infor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon to ensu\u00adre they are pre\u00adpared,\u201d he&nbsp;said.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Atos brings an impres\u00adsi\u00adve track record of suc\u00adcess in this field, and its back\u00adground in deli\u00adve\u00adring advan\u00adced super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adting solu\u00adti\u00adons to some of the world\u2019s best meteo\u00adro\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal ser\u00advices will ensu\u00adre we are pla\u00adced on a firm foo\u00adting for success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Atos sys\u00adtem will be hos\u00adted in the new <span class=\"caps\">ECMWF<\/span> data cent\u00adre curr\u00adent\u00adly being deve\u00adlo\u00adped by the Ita\u00adli\u00adan Govern\u00adment and the Regio\u00adne Emi\u00adlia Roma\u00adgna in Bolo\u00adgna, Ita\u00adly.
