STENNIS<\/span> SPACE<\/span> CENTER<\/span>, Miss.<\/strong> \u2014 The Navy Depart\u00adment of Defen\u00adse Super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adting Resour\u00adce Cen\u00adter (DSRC<\/span>) is plea\u00adsed to announ\u00adce that it will recei\u00adve the lar\u00adgest, most capa\u00adble super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adting sys\u00adtem pro\u00adcu\u00adred to date in the Depart\u00adment of Defen\u00adse (DoD) High Per\u00adfor\u00admance Com\u00adpu\u00adting Moder\u00adniza\u00adti\u00adon Pro\u00adgram (HPCMP<\/span>).<\/p>\n

At a peak theo\u00adre\u00adti\u00adcal com\u00adpu\u00adting capa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty of 12.8 Peta\u00adFLOPS, or 12.8 qua\u00addril\u00adli\u00adon floa\u00adting point ope\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons per second, the mul\u00adti-mil\u00adli\u00adon dol\u00adlar Cray Shas\u00adta super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adter will be the first high-per\u00adfor\u00admance com\u00adpu\u00adting sys\u00adtem in the HPCMP<\/span> to pro\u00advi\u00adde over ten peta\u00adFLOPS of com\u00adpu\u00adting power to Depart\u00adment of Defen\u00adse sci\u00aden\u00adtists, rese\u00adar\u00adchers, and engi\u00adneers. It will be housed and ope\u00adra\u00adted at the Navy DSRC<\/span> at Sten\u00adnis Space Cen\u00adter in sou\u00adthern Mississippi.<\/p>\n

That pro\u00adjec\u00adted com\u00adpu\u00adting capa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty of the new sys\u00adtem puts it in good com\u00adpa\u00adny: today, it would be ran\u00adked among the top 25 most capa\u00adble super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adters in the world when com\u00adpared to the cur\u00adrent list at Top500.org, which ranks the world\u2019s most powerful non-dis\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adted com\u00adpu\u00adter systems.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The invest\u00adment and increase in super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adting power at the Navy DSRC<\/span> at Sten\u00adnis Space Cen\u00adter is abso\u00adlut\u00ade\u00adly cri\u00adti\u00adcal to Naval Ocea\u00adno\u00adgra\u00adphy deli\u00adve\u00adring future capa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty upgrades to glo\u00adbal and regio\u00adnal oce\u00adan and atmo\u00adsphe\u00adric pre\u00addic\u00adtion sys\u00adtems, to include later this year the Navy\u2019s first Earth Sys\u00adtems Pre\u00addic\u00adtion Capa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty,\u201d said Com\u00adman\u00adder, Navy Meteo\u00adro\u00adlo\u00adgy and Ocea\u00adno\u00adgra\u00adphy Com\u00admand (NMOC<\/span>) Rear Adm. John Okon.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Naval Oceanography\u2019s abili\u00adty to be the Depart\u00adment of Defense\u2019s aut\u00adho\u00adri\u00adta\u00adti\u00adve source for cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adri\u00adzing and app\u00adly\u00ading data of the phy\u00adsi\u00adcal batt\u00adle\u00adspace into a decisi\u00adve advan\u00adta\u00adge for naval, joint and allied forces hin\u00adges on the con\u00adti\u00adnu\u00adal upgrade and advance\u00adments in high-per\u00adfor\u00admance com\u00adpu\u00adting from the High Per\u00adfor\u00admance Com\u00adpu\u00adting Moder\u00adniza\u00adti\u00adon Program.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cray Shas\u00adta super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adter will fea\u00adture 290,304 AMD<\/span> EPYC<\/span> (Rome) pro\u00adces\u00adsor cores and 112 NVIDIA<\/span> Vol\u00adta V100<\/span> Gene\u00adral-Pur\u00adpo\u00adse Gra\u00adphics Pro\u00adces\u00adsing Units (GPG\u00adPUs), inter\u00adcon\u00adnec\u00adted by a 200 giga\u00adbit per second Cray Slingshot net\u00adwork. The sys\u00adtem will also fea\u00adture 590 total tera\u00adbytes (TB<\/span>) of memo\u00adry and 14 peta\u00adbytes (PB<\/span>) of usable sto\u00adrage, inclu\u00adding 1 PB<\/span> of NVMe-based solid sta\u00adte storage.<\/p>\n

The Navy DSRC<\/span> and the HPCMP<\/span> offer super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adting capa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty to the DoD Sci\u00adence and Tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgy (S&<\/span>T), Test and Eva\u00adlua\u00adti\u00adon (T&<\/span>E), and Acqui\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon Engi\u00adnee\u00adring com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties in sup\u00adport of various rese\u00adarch efforts within the DoD, inclu\u00adding air\u00adcraft and ship design, envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal qua\u00adli\u00adty mode\u00adling, and other pro\u00adjects to main\u00adtain the U.S. military\u2019s advan\u00adta\u00adge over poten\u00adti\u00adal adversaries.<\/p>\n

In par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar, Navy DSRC<\/span> super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adters sup\u00adport cli\u00adma\u00adte, wea\u00adther, and oce\u00adan mode\u00adling by NMOC<\/span>, which assists U.S. Navy meteo\u00adro\u00adlo\u00adgists and ocea\u00adno\u00adgraph\u00aders in pre\u00addic\u00adting envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal con\u00addi\u00adti\u00adons that may affect the Navy fleet. Among other sci\u00aden\u00adti\u00adfic endea\u00advors, the new super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adter will be used to enhan\u00adce wea\u00adther fore\u00adcas\u00adting models; ulti\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly, this impro\u00adves the accu\u00adra\u00adcy of hur\u00adri\u00adca\u00adne inten\u00adsi\u00adty and track forecasts.<\/p>\n

The sys\u00adtem is expec\u00adted to be online by ear\u00adly fis\u00adcal year 2021.<\/p>\n

Navy DSRC<\/span> curr\u00adent\u00adly pro\u00advi\u00addes almost 12 peta\u00adFLOPS of aggre\u00adga\u00adte super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adting capa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty to the Depart\u00adment of Defen\u00adse. It is one of five DoD Super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adting Resour\u00adce Cen\u00adters (DSRCs) in the DoD High Per\u00adfor\u00admance Com\u00adpu\u00adting Moder\u00adniza\u00adti\u00adon Pro\u00adgram (HPCMP<\/span>), and is ope\u00adra\u00adted by NMOC<\/span> on behalf of the DoD HPCMP<\/span>.<\/p>\n
