We hear that many of you hoped a lon\u00adger upgrade path. We hear your hope that AMD<\/span> B450<\/span> and X470<\/span> chip\u00adsets would car\u00adry you into the \u201cZen 3\u201d era.<\/p>\n

Our expe\u00adri\u00adence has been that lar\u00adge-sca\u00adle BIOS<\/span> upgrades can be dif\u00adfi\u00adcult and con\u00adfu\u00adsing espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly as pro\u00adces\u00adsors come on and off the sup\u00adport lists. As the com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty of Socket AM4<\/span> cus\u00adto\u00admers has grown over the past three years, our inten\u00adti\u00adon was to take a path for\u00adward that pro\u00advi\u00addes the safest upgrade expe\u00adri\u00adence for the lar\u00adgest num\u00adber of users. Howe\u00adver, we hear you loud and clear when you tell us you would like to see B450<\/span> or X470<\/span> boards exten\u00added to the next gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon \u201cZen 3\u201d products.<\/p>\n

As the team weig\u00adhed your feed\u00adback against the tech\u00adni\u00adcal chal\u00adlenges we face, we deci\u00added to chan\u00adge cour\u00adse. As a result, we will enable an upgrade path for B450<\/span> and X470<\/span> cus\u00adto\u00admers that adds sup\u00adport for next-gen AMD<\/span> Ryzen\u2122 Pro\u00adces\u00adsors with the \u201cZen 3\u201d archi\u00adtec\u00adtu\u00adre. This decis\u00adi\u00adon is very fresh, but here is a first look at how the upgrade path is expec\u00adted to work for cus\u00adto\u00admers of the\u00adse motherboards.<\/p>\n

We will deve\u00adlop and enable our mother\u00adboard part\u00adners with the code to sup\u00adport \u201cZen 3\u201d-based pro\u00adces\u00adsors in sel\u00adect beta BIO\u00adSes for AMD<\/span> B450<\/span> and X470<\/span> motherboards.
\nThe\u00adse optio\u00adnal BIOS<\/span> updates will disable sup\u00adport for many exis\u00adting AMD<\/span> Ryzen\u2122 Desk\u00adtop Pro\u00adces\u00adsor models to make the neces\u00adsa\u00adry ROM<\/span> space available.<\/p>\n

The sel\u00adect beta BIO\u00adSes will enable a one-way upgrade path for AMD<\/span> Ryzen Pro\u00adces\u00adsors with \u201cZen 3,\u201d coming later this year. Flas\u00adhing back to an older BIOS<\/span> ver\u00adsi\u00adon will not be supported.<\/p>\n

To redu\u00adce the poten\u00adti\u00adal for con\u00adfu\u00adsi\u00adon, our intent is to offer BIOS<\/span> down\u00adload only to veri\u00adfied cus\u00adto\u00admers of 400 Series mother\u00adboards who have purcha\u00adsed a new desk\u00adtop pro\u00adces\u00adsor with \u201cZen 3\u201d insi\u00adde. This will help us ensu\u00adre that cus\u00adto\u00admers have a boota\u00adble pro\u00adces\u00adsor on-hand after the BIOS<\/span> flash, mini\u00admi\u00adzing the risk a user could get caught in a no-boot situation.
\nTiming and avai\u00adla\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty of the BIOS<\/span> updates will vary and may not imme\u00addia\u00adte\u00adly coin\u00adci\u00adde with the avai\u00adla\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty of the first \u201cZen 3\u201d-based processors.<\/p>\n

This is the final pathway AMD<\/span> can enable for 400 Series mother\u00adboards to add new CPU<\/span> sup\u00adport. CPU<\/span> releases bey\u00adond \u201cZen 3\u201d will requi\u00adre a newer motherboard.
\nAMD<\/span> con\u00adti\u00adnues to recom\u00admend that cus\u00adto\u00admers choo\u00adse an AMD<\/span> 500 Series mother\u00adboard for the best per\u00adfor\u00admance and fea\u00adtures with our new CPUs.<\/p>\n

The\u00adre are still many details to iron out, but we\u2019ve alre\u00ada\u00addy star\u00adted the neces\u00adsa\u00adry plan\u00adning.
