WEST<\/span> LAFAYETTE<\/span>, Ind. \u2014 Pur\u00addue Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty will soon be the home of Anvil, a powerful new super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adter that will pro\u00advi\u00adde advan\u00adced com\u00adpu\u00adting capa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adties to sup\u00adport a wide ran\u00adge of com\u00adpu\u00adta\u00adtio\u00adnal and data-inten\u00adsi\u00adve rese\u00adarch span\u00adning from tra\u00addi\u00adtio\u00adnal high-per\u00adfor\u00admance com\u00adpu\u00adting to modern arti\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adal intel\u00adli\u00adgence applications.<\/p>\n

Anvil, which is fun\u00added by a $10 mil\u00adli\u00adon award from the Natio\u00adnal Sci\u00adence Foun\u00adda\u00adti\u00adon, will signi\u00adfi\u00adcant\u00adly increase the capa\u00adci\u00adty available to the NSF<\/span>\u2019s Extre\u00adme Sci\u00adence and Engi\u00adnee\u00adring Dis\u00adco\u00advery Envi\u00adron\u00adment (XSEDE<\/span>), which ser\u00adves tens of thou\u00adsands of rese\u00adar\u00adchers across the U.S., and in which Pur\u00addue has been a part\u00adner for the past nine years. Anvil will enter pro\u00adduc\u00adtion in 2021 and will ser\u00adve rese\u00adar\u00adchers for five years. Addi\u00adtio\u00adnal fun\u00adding from the NSF<\/span> will sup\u00adport Anvil\u2019s ope\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons and user support.<\/p>\n

By buil\u00adding Anvil along\u00adside its com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty clus\u00adter super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adters, inclu\u00adding the 2020 \u201cBell\u201d sys\u00adtem being built for the Pur\u00addue cam\u00adpus, Pur\u00addue will levera\u00adge its exis\u00adting cam\u00adpus com\u00adpu\u00adting infra\u00adstruc\u00adtu\u00adre, such as mas\u00adsi\u00adve sto\u00adrage sys\u00adtems, high-speed net\u00adwor\u00adking, and its team of expert ITaP staff that has alre\u00ada\u00addy deploy\u00aded 14 lar\u00adge super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adters sin\u00adce 2008. Purdue\u2019s com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty clus\u00adters ser\u00adve thou\u00adsands of rese\u00adar\u00adchers and stu\u00addents each year.<\/p>\n

Pres\u00adton Smith, exe\u00adcu\u00adti\u00adve direc\u00adtor of rese\u00adarch com\u00adpu\u00adting and a co-PI on the pro\u00adject, says that Anvil will be opti\u00admi\u00adzed for both the tra\u00addi\u00adtio\u00adnal par\u00adal\u00adlel com\u00adpu\u00adting that dri\u00adves rese\u00adarch in are\u00adas like flu\u00adid dyna\u00admics and bio\u00adin\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtics, and also for data sci\u00adence, arti\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adal intel\u00adli\u00adgence and machi\u00adne lear\u00adning applications.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The name \u2018Anvil\u2019 reflects the Pur\u00addue Boi\u00adler\u00adma\u00adkers\u2019 strength and work\u00adm\u00adan\u00adli\u00adke focus on pro\u00addu\u00adcing results, and the Anvil super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adter will enable important dis\u00adco\u00adveries across many dif\u00adfe\u00adrent are\u00adas of sci\u00adence and engi\u00adnee\u00adring,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Anvil also will ser\u00adve as an expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adti\u00adal lear\u00adning labo\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry for stu\u00addents to gain real-world expe\u00adri\u00adence using com\u00adpu\u00adting for their sci\u00adence, and for stu\u00addent interns to work with the Anvil team for con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion and ope\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon. We will be trai\u00adning the rese\u00adarch com\u00adpu\u00adting prac\u00adti\u00adtio\u00adners of the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Anvil will be built in part\u00adner\u00adship with Dell and AMD<\/span> and will con\u00adsist of 1,000 128-core AMD<\/span> Epyc \u201cMilan\u201d pro\u00adces\u00adsors and will deli\u00adver over 1 bil\u00adli\u00adon CPU<\/span> core hours to XSEDE<\/span> each year, with a peak per\u00adfor\u00admance of 5.3 peta\u00adflops. Anvil\u2019s nodes will be inter\u00adcon\u00adnec\u00adted with 100 Gbps Mel\u00adlan\u00adox HDR<\/span> Infi\u00adni\u00adBand. The super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adter eco\u00adsys\u00adtem also will include 32 lar\u00adge memo\u00adry nodes, each with 1 TB<\/span> of RAM<\/span>, and 16 nodes each with four NVIDIA<\/span> A100<\/span> Ten\u00adsor Core GPUs pro\u00advi\u00adding 1.5 PF<\/span> of sin\u00adgle-pre\u00adcis\u00adi\u00adon per\u00adfor\u00admance to sup\u00adport machi\u00adne lear\u00adning and arti\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adal intel\u00adli\u00adgence applications.<\/p>\n

Rese\u00adarch on Anvil will be able to levera\u00adge a diver\u00adse set of sto\u00adrage tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies, ancho\u00adred by a 10+ PB<\/span> par\u00adal\u00adlel file\u00adsys\u00adtem, boos\u00adted with over 3 PB<\/span> of flash disk. Sto\u00adrage for acti\u00adve pro\u00adjects and archi\u00adval data will be pro\u00advi\u00added by Purdue\u2019s Rese\u00adarch Data Depot and Fort\u00adress archi\u00adve. Novel work\u00adflows will bene\u00adfit from block and object sto\u00adrage sys\u00adtems also sup\u00adport\u00aded by Anvil.<\/p>\n

Anvil also will pro\u00advi\u00adde a rich set of fea\u00adtures that will broa\u00adden access to advan\u00adced com\u00adpu\u00adting,  inclu\u00adding inter\u00adac\u00adti\u00adve com\u00adpu\u00adting and visua\u00adliza\u00adti\u00adon capa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adties, and a ful\u00adly inte\u00adgra\u00adted web-based Open OnDe\u00admand gate\u00adway to Anvil\u2019s soft\u00adware tools and com\u00adpu\u00adte nodes. A com\u00adposable sub\u00adsys\u00adtem will enable cloud and con\u00adtai\u00adner-based work\u00adflows to run along\u00adside the high-per\u00adfor\u00admance com\u00adpu\u00adting sys\u00adtem and will sup\u00adport many modern sci\u00aden\u00adti\u00adfic appli\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons, from gate\u00adways, data\u00adba\u00adses, high-through\u00adput data inges\u00adti\u00adon pipe\u00adlines, to com\u00adplex cou\u00adpled mode\u00adling work\u00adflows. With seam\u00adless pathways to Micro\u00adsoft Azu\u00adre cloud, Anvil will help rese\u00adar\u00adchers levera\u00adge both on-pre\u00admi\u00adses and com\u00admer\u00adcial cloud com\u00adpu\u00adting for advan\u00adced appli\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons such as arti\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adal intel\u00adli\u00adgence mode\u00adling and inference.<\/p>\n
