The Per\u00adva\u00adsi\u00adve Tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgy Insti\u00adtu\u00adte at India\u00adna Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty has been award\u00aded a $10 mil\u00adli\u00adon grant from the Natio\u00adnal Sci\u00adence Foun\u00adda\u00adti\u00adon to deploy Jet\u00adstream 2, a dis\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adted cloud com\u00adpu\u00adting sys\u00adtem to sup\u00adport on-demand rese\u00adarch, arti\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adal intel\u00adli\u00adgence and enhan\u00adced lar\u00adge-sca\u00adle data ana\u00adly\u00adses for the nation.<\/p>\n

Jet\u00adstream 2\u2019s signa\u00adtu\u00adre inno\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon is its abili\u00adty to make high-per\u00adfor\u00admance com\u00adpu\u00adting and soft\u00adware easy to use by rese\u00adar\u00adchers who have limi\u00adt\u00aded expe\u00adri\u00adence with super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adting sys\u00adtems. This is espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly hel\u00adpful for smal\u00adler aca\u00adde\u00admic com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties with litt\u00adle pre\u00advious access to such resour\u00adces. IU<\/span> is expec\u00adted to recei\u00adve near\u00adly $20 mil\u00adli\u00adon in total from the NSF<\/span> to crea\u00adte, imple\u00adment and ope\u00adra\u00adte Jet\u00adstream 2 over five years.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>For over 20 years, India\u00adna Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty has con\u00adtin\u00adued to grow in our high-per\u00adfor\u00admance com\u00adpu\u00adting exper\u00adti\u00adse, sta\u00adtu\u00adre and ser\u00advice to the nation\u2019s rese\u00adarch com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adve\u00adness,\u201d IU<\/span> Pre\u00adsi\u00addent Micha\u00adel A. McRob\u00adbie said. \u201cThe NSF<\/span>\u2019s rene\u00adwal and expan\u00adsi\u00adon of Jet\u00adstream will push the total NSF<\/span> invest\u00adment in IU-led com\u00adpu\u00adting sys\u00adtems to over $50 mil\u00adli\u00adon in the last deca\u00adde, and we are gra\u00adteful to the NSF<\/span> for their con\u00adfi\u00addence in IU<\/span>\u2019s lea\u00adder\u00adship and abili\u00adties in this vital sci\u00aden\u00adti\u00adfic area for the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Jet\u00adstream 2 builds on the tre\u00admen\u00addous suc\u00adcess of the ori\u00adgi\u00adnal Jet\u00adstream sys\u00adtem at IU<\/span> and with our part\u00adners,\u201d said Brad Whee\u00adler, IU<\/span> vice pre\u00adsi\u00addent for infor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgy and chief infor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon offi\u00adcer. \u201cIt bund\u00adles com\u00adpu\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon, soft\u00adware and access to sto\u00adrage for indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adals and teams of rese\u00adar\u00adchers who span hundreds of are\u00adas of rese\u00adarch and who work at the fron\u00adtiers of sci\u00aden\u00adti\u00adfic inquiry. The cur\u00adrent Jet\u00adstream<\/a> sys\u00adtem was led by IU<\/span> in 2014 and fun\u00added as the NSF<\/span>\u2019s first pro\u00adduc\u00adtion sci\u00adence and engi\u00adnee\u00adring rese\u00adarch cloud sys\u00adtem for the nati\u00adon. Jet\u00adstream has offe\u00adred cloud-based, on-demand com\u00adpu\u00adting and data ana\u00adly\u00adsis resour\u00adces within the natio\u00adnal Extre\u00adme Sci\u00adence and Engi\u00adnee\u00adring Dis\u00adco\u00advery Envi\u00adron\u00adment, known as XSEDE<\/span>.<\/a><\/u><\/p>\n

Over the years, the Jet\u00adstream sys\u00adtem has given thou\u00adsands of U.S. rese\u00adar\u00adchers access to a powerful cloud-based envi\u00adron\u00adment that com\u00adple\u00adments other NSF<\/span> sys\u00adtems \u2014 all from a lap\u00adtop or iPad \u2014 allo\u00adwing them to explo\u00adre and under\u00adstand immense amounts of data. Today, Jet\u00adstream is part of the COVID-19<\/span> HPC<\/span> Con\u00adsor\u00adti\u00adum<\/a>, offe\u00adring resour\u00adces in sup\u00adport of rese\u00adarch rela\u00adted to fin\u00adding a cure for the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>We intend Jet\u00adstream 2 to be a demo\u00adcra\u00adtiz\u00ading force within the NSF<\/span> eco\u00adsys\u00adtem, allo\u00adwing rese\u00adar\u00adchers and edu\u00adca\u00adtors access to cut\u00adting-edge resour\u00adces regard\u00adless of pro\u00adject sca\u00adle,\u201d said David Y. The pro\u00adject team also has a goal of ser\u00adving more stu\u00addents than any other NSF-fun\u00added cyber\u00adin\u00adfra\u00adstruc\u00adtu\u00adre resour\u00adce, lea\u00adding to a diver\u00adse pool of gra\u00addua\u00adtes ente\u00adring the STEM<\/span> work\u00adforce with robust trai\u00adning in com\u00adpu\u00adta\u00adtio\u00adnal sci\u00adence. Jet\u00adstream 2 builds on the class\u00adroom suc\u00adcess of Jet\u00adstream, which was used in clas\u00adses to teach com\u00adpu\u00adta\u00adtio\u00adnal bio\u00adlo\u00adgy and che\u00admis\u00adtry, and in stu\u00addent pro\u00adjects on AI<\/span> approa\u00adches to bio\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal field rese\u00adarch, vete\u00adri\u00adna\u00adry medi\u00adci\u00adne and tex\u00adtu\u00adal analysis.<\/p>\n

Con\u00adsis\u00adting of five com\u00adpu\u00adta\u00adtio\u00adnal sys\u00adtems, Jet\u00adstream 2\u2019s pri\u00adma\u00adry sys\u00adtem will be loca\u00adted at India\u00adna Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, with four smal\u00adler regio\u00adnal sys\u00adtems deploy\u00aded nati\u00adon\u00adwi\u00adde at part\u00adners Ari\u00adzo\u00adna Sta\u00adte Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, Cor\u00adnell Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Hawai\u2019i and the Texas Advan\u00adced Com\u00adpu\u00adting Cen\u00adter. The 8 peta\u00adFLOPS cloud com\u00adpu\u00adting sys\u00adtem will use next-gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon AMD<\/span> EPYC<\/span> pro\u00adces\u00adsors and NVIDIA<\/span> A100<\/span> GPUs, and 18.5 peta\u00adbytes of sto\u00adrage. Addi\u00adtio\u00adnal Jet\u00adstream 2 part\u00adners include the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Ari\u00adzo\u00adna, Johns Hop\u00adkins Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty and the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty Cor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon for Atmo\u00adsphe\u00adric Rese\u00adarch, with Dell Inc. as the pri\u00adma\u00adry supplier.<\/p>\n
