SUNNYVALE<\/span>, Calif. \u2014 Nov. 18, 2013<\/b> \u2014<\/b> AMD<\/span><\/a> (NYSE<\/span>: AMD<\/span>) today announ\u00adced that it was sel\u00adec\u00adted for an award of $3.1 mil\u00adli\u00adon for a rese\u00adarch pro\u00adject asso\u00adcia\u00adted with the U.S. Depart\u00adment of Ener\u00adgy<\/a> (DOE<\/span>) Extre\u00adme-Sca\u00adle Com\u00adpu\u00adting Rese\u00adarch and Deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment Pro\u00adgram, known as \u201cDesign\u00adFor\u00adward.\u201d The DOE<\/span> award is an expan\u00adsi\u00adon of work star\u00adted as part of ano\u00adther two-year award AMD<\/span> recei\u00adved in 2012 cal\u00adled \u201cFast\u00adFor\u00adward.\u201d The Fast\u00adFor\u00adward award aims to acce\u00adle\u00adra\u00adte the rese\u00adarch and deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment of pro\u00adces\u00adsor and memo\u00adry tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies nee\u00added to sup\u00adport extre\u00adme-sca\u00adle com\u00adpu\u00adting. The Design\u00adFor\u00adward award sup\u00adports the rese\u00adarch of the inter\u00adcon\u00adnect archi\u00adtec\u00adtures and tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies nee\u00added to sup\u00adport the data trans\u00adfer capa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adties in extre\u00adme-sca\u00adle com\u00adpu\u00adting environments.<\/p>\n

Design\u00adFor\u00adward is a joint\u00adly fun\u00added col\u00adla\u00adbo\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon bet\u00adween the DOE<\/span> Office of Sci\u00adence and the U.S. Natio\u00adnal Nuclear Secu\u00adri\u00adty Admi\u00adnis\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon<\/a> (NNSA<\/span>) to acce\u00adle\u00adra\u00adte the rese\u00adarch and deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment of cri\u00adti\u00adcal tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgies nee\u00added for extre\u00adme-sca\u00adle com\u00adpu\u00adting, on the path toward Exas\u00adca\u00adle com\u00adpu\u00adting.  Exas\u00adca\u00adle super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adters are expec\u00adted to be capa\u00adble of per\u00adforming com\u00adpu\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon hundreds of times fas\u00adter than today\u2019s fas\u00adtest com\u00adpu\u00adters, with only slight\u00adly hig\u00adher power uti\u00adliza\u00adti\u00adon. In order to achie\u00adve this dra\u00adma\u00adtic increase in com\u00adpu\u00adting capa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty while main\u00adtai\u00adning low power con\u00adsump\u00adti\u00adon, leaps in rese\u00adarch and deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment need to be advan\u00adced in all aspects of computing.<\/p>\n
