19 April 2021-Com\u00adpu\u00adting hard\u00adware manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adrer AMD<\/span> has dona\u00adted 10 ser\u00adver sys\u00adtems to the High-Per\u00adfor\u00admance Com\u00adpu\u00adting Cen\u00adter Stutt\u00adgart (HLRS<\/span>) that will be dedi\u00adca\u00adted for rese\u00adarch rela\u00adted to the SARS-CoV\u20112 pan\u00adde\u00admic. The new resour\u00adces, which were deli\u00adver\u00aded this week, will also expand HLRS<\/span>\u2019s capa\u00adci\u00adty to address future urgent com\u00adpu\u00adting needs.<\/p>\n

The dona\u00adti\u00adon comes as part of the AMD<\/span> COVID-19<\/span> High Per\u00adfor\u00admance Com\u00adpu\u00adting Fund<\/a>, which was estab\u00adlished in April 2020 to pro\u00advi\u00adde rese\u00adarch insti\u00adtu\u00adti\u00adons around the world with com\u00adpu\u00adting resour\u00adces to acce\u00adle\u00adra\u00adte medi\u00adcal rese\u00adarch on COVID-19<\/span> and other dise\u00ada\u00adses. HLRS<\/span> is among the first Euro\u00adpean HPC<\/span> cen\u00adters to recei\u00adve a dona\u00adti\u00adon under pha\u00adse two of this program.<\/p>\n

The new AMD<\/span> nodes will be inte\u00adgra\u00adted into HLRS<\/span>\u2019s Vul\u00adcan clus\u00adter. Each of the dona\u00adted ser\u00advers con\u00adta\u00adins one AMD<\/span> EPYC<\/span>\u2122 pro\u00adces\u00adsor and eight AMD<\/span> Instinct\u2122 acce\u00adle\u00adra\u00adtors, which are opti\u00admi\u00adzed for appli\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons invol\u00adving machi\u00adne lear\u00adning, deep lear\u00adning, and arti\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adal intel\u00adli\u00adgence. The ser\u00adver sys\u00adtems, built by Pen\u00adgu\u00adin Com\u00adpu\u00adting, will offer 530 TFlops of 64-bit floa\u00adting-point performance.<\/p>\n

The new hard\u00adware will sup\u00adport HLRS<\/span>\u2019s acti\u00advi\u00adties in the field of Glo\u00adbal Sys\u00adtems Sci\u00adence. This includes its par\u00adti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adti\u00adon in the HIDALGO<\/span><\/a> pro\u00adject, a Cen\u00adter of Excel\u00adlence (CoE) fun\u00added by the Euro\u00adpean Union\u2019s Hori\u00adzon 2020 Pro\u00adgram\u00adme, and in the bwHPC-S5<\/a> pro\u00adject, fun\u00added by the Sta\u00adte of Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg.<\/p>\n

HLRS<\/span> Direc\u00adtor Micha\u00adel Resch wel\u00adco\u00admed the arri\u00adval of the new nodes, explai\u00adning, \u201cThe COVID-19<\/span> cri\u00adsis has been a big wake\u00adup call in Ger\u00adma\u00adny and across Euro\u00adpe, show\u00ading that new chal\u00adlenges can ari\u00adse very sud\u00adden\u00adly and have wide\u00adspread impacts across socie\u00adties. Becau\u00adse high-per\u00adfor\u00admance com\u00adpu\u00adting is incre\u00adasing\u00adly important in sci\u00aden\u00adti\u00adfic disci\u00adpli\u00adnes that address such chal\u00adlenges, it is important that HPC<\/span> cen\u00adters have suf\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adent super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adting capa\u00adci\u00adty to react to sud\u00adden and urgent sur\u00adges in need. We are very hap\u00adpy for this dona\u00adti\u00adon from AMD<\/span>, as it will impro\u00adve our abili\u00adty to sup\u00adport sci\u00aden\u00adtists in Ger\u00adma\u00adny and in the EU<\/span> who are working to bet\u00adter under\u00adstand the coro\u00adna\u00advi\u00adrus pan\u00adde\u00admic and pro\u00advi\u00adde insights that govern\u00adments and health\u00adca\u00adre orga\u00adniza\u00adti\u00adons can use to address it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alre\u00ada\u00addy, HLRS<\/span> has begun working with the Ger\u00adman Fede\u00adral Insti\u00adtu\u00adte for Popu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon Rese\u00adarch (Bun\u00addes\u00adin\u00adsti\u00adtut f\u00fcr Bev\u00f6l\u00adke\u00adrungs\u00adfor\u00adschung) to imple\u00adment a model for pre\u00addic\u00adting the need for inten\u00adsi\u00adve care units across Ger\u00adma\u00adny up to eight weeks into the future. The dai\u00adly \u201cwea\u00adther report,\u201d which will soon run on the new\u00adly dona\u00adted infra\u00adstruc\u00adtu\u00adre, could help health experts and govern\u00adment offi\u00adci\u00adals bet\u00adter anti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adte when and whe\u00adre inter\u00adven\u00adti\u00adons such as lock\u00addowns could beco\u00adme neces\u00adsa\u00adry \u2014 or be lifted \u2014 in respon\u00adse to chan\u00adging stres\u00adses on hos\u00adpi\u00adtals\u2019 resources.<\/p>\n
