Atos today announ\u00adces a con\u00adtract to build and install a new high-per\u00adfor\u00admance com\u00adpu\u00adter for the Max Planck Socie\u00adty, a world-lea\u00adding sci\u00adence and tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgy rese\u00adarch orga\u00adniza\u00adti\u00adon. The new sys\u00adtem will be based on Atos\u2019 latest Bull\u00adSe\u00adqua\u00adna XH3000<\/span> plat\u00adform, which is powered by AMD<\/span> EPYC<\/span>\u2122 CPUs and Instinct\u2122 acce\u00adle\u00adra\u00adtors. In its final con\u00adfi\u00adgu\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon, the appli\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon per\u00adfor\u00admance will be three times hig\u00adher than the cur\u00adrent \u201cCobra\u201d sys\u00adtem, which is also based on Atos technologies.<\/p>\n

The new super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adter, with a total order value of over 20 mil\u00adli\u00adon euros, will be ope\u00adra\u00adted by the Max Planck Com\u00adpu\u00adting and Data Faci\u00adli\u00adty (MPCDF<\/span>) in Gar\u00adching near Munich and will pro\u00advi\u00adde high-per\u00adfor\u00admance com\u00adpu\u00adting (HPC<\/span>) capa\u00adci\u00adty for many insti\u00adtu\u00adtes of the Max Planck Socie\u00adty. Par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar\u00adly deman\u00adding sci\u00aden\u00adti\u00adfic pro\u00adjects, such as tho\u00adse in astro\u00adphy\u00adsics, life sci\u00adence rese\u00adarch, mate\u00adri\u00adals rese\u00adarch, plas\u00adma phy\u00adsics, and AI<\/span> will bene\u00adfit from the high-per\u00adfor\u00admance capa\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adties of the new system.<\/p>\n

The sys\u00adtem will run wit\u00adhout fans thanks to its unmat\u00adched hot water coo\u00adling (Direct Liquid Coo\u00adling) and thus have a signi\u00adfi\u00adcant\u00adly impro\u00adved ener\u00adgy effi\u00adci\u00aden\u00adcy. The effi\u00adci\u00aden\u00adcy gai\u00adned from this Atos\u2019 coo\u00adling sys\u00adtem matched with the latest in sili\u00adcon archi\u00adtec\u00adtu\u00adre inno\u00adva\u00adtions from AMD<\/span>, desi\u00adgned with ener\u00adgy effi\u00adci\u00aden\u00adcy in mind, brings the Power Usa\u00adge Effec\u00adti\u00adve\u00adness (PUE<\/span>) value to less than 1.05 (1 being the ide\u00adal ratio), far below the avera\u00adge of other HPC<\/span> installations.<\/p>\n

The instal\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon will fea\u00adture 4th<\/sup> Gen AMD<\/span> EPYC<\/span> pro\u00adces\u00adsors and for the first time in an Atos-based Euro\u00adpean sys\u00adtem, the upco\u00adming AMD<\/span> Instinct MI300A<\/span> acce\u00adle\u00adra\u00adtor. The sys\u00adtem will con\u00adsist of ten Bull\u00adSe\u00adqua\u00adna XH3000<\/span> racks with a total of 768 pro\u00adces\u00adsor nodes of and 192 acce\u00adle\u00adra\u00adtor nodes and will be com\u00adple\u00admen\u00adted with an IBM<\/span> Spec\u00adtrumS\u00adca\u00adle sto\u00adrage solu\u00adti\u00adon. The CPU<\/span> nodes will be deli\u00adver\u00aded in the third quar\u00adter of 2023, with full instal\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon of the GPU<\/span> nodes expec\u00adted in the first half of 2024.<\/p>\n
