AMD und Cray haben ihren Kooperationsvertrag bis Ende 2010 verlängert. Beide Unternehmen wollen zusammen einen Petaflop-Rechner entwickeln. In der nahen Zukunft will Cray weiterhin Opteron-Prozessoren für seine Supercomputer verwenden, wie sie z.B. in den den aktuellen Modelle XT3 und XD1 zum Einsatz kommen. <ul><i>SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 2005--AMD (NYSE:AMD) and Cray Inc., (Nasdaq NM:CRAY) today announced that they have signed an agreement that extends their successful relationship through the end of the decade. Cray will continue to use AMD Opteron(TM) processors for the microprocessor-based supercomputer products Cray develops during this period. In addition, the two firms will actively collaborate on Cray's mid-2006 proposal for Phase 3 of the federal government's DARPA HPCS (High Productivity Computing Systems) program.
"After an extensive review of marketplace alternatives, we selected the AMD64 platform as the microarchitecture for our next-generation supercomputer products," said Cray President and CEO Peter Ungaro. "In the near-term, the AMD Opteron processor roadmap provides our customers a smooth upgrade path to multi-core systems. Through 2010, AMD's multi-core processor roadmap and HyperTransport(TM) technology capabilities stand out for their ability to help meet our aggressive performance goals. Our success working with AMD in developing the Cray XT3(TM) and the Cray XD1(TM) systems gives us great confidence that AMD is the right partner to help Cray advance the boundaries of high performance computing."
Cray and AMD will work closely together on Cray's mid-2006 submission for Phase 3 of the DARPA HPCS program. The program plans to provide economically viable, next-generation high productivity computing systems for the national security, scientific and industrial user communities that are able to run applications at sustained speeds of one petaflop (million billion calculations per second) or more by the end of the decade.
"We anticipate our shared customers are excited about this strengthened relationship with Cray, the leading innovator in high performance computing, and we see this agreement as a strong vote of confidence in AMD and our role in high performance computing," said Henri Richard, executive vice president and chief sales and marketing officer at AMD. juhu, dann kann man sich ja auf einen höheren AMD anteil bei den nächsten Top-500 listen freuen... ist sicherlich gut für die absatzzahlen, wenn die mal eben 10.000 opterons ordern...

naja was bleibt Cray anderes übrig, ich warte eigentlich nur darauf, dass sich endlich mal einer erbarmt und die Firma aufkauft. 
SGI und Cray geht es schlecht.
Es scheint fast so, dass Cray ein eng Verbündeter ist von AMD. SGI ist hingegen ein eng Verbündeter von Intel mit dem Itanium. Immerhin ist auch ein Itanium in den Top Ten ... vor dem Spitzenmodell mit einem Opteron.

Ansonsten: Sicherlich nicht der Absatzkracher schlechthin, aber was besseres fürs Image gibts ja kaum. Jetzt muss AMD nur noch hoffen, dass Cray was vernünftiges zusammenschwartet.

Das Problem ist, dass dieser Markt massiv von unten durch kleine Cluster unter Druck gesetzt wird. Für die Spezialisten wie Cray oder SGI wird da die Luft sehr dünn, weil sie praktisch kein weiteres Standbein haben.
SGI hat zusätzlich das Problem, dass sie nie wirklich von den Workstations weggekommen sind. Als der Markt dann von den PCs übernommen wurde, kam dann der tiefe Fall. SGI lebt in einer absoluten Nische, welche durch die PCs immer mehr "aufgefressen" wird. Da SGI nichts anderes im Portfolio hat, geht es ihnen jetzt entsprechend dreckig.

Wenn ich das jetzt richtig in erinnerung habe, was ist eigentlich mit dem Red Storm, wird der noch ausgebaut?
@it: Jetzt fällts mir wieder ein, hieß es nicht mal, den Red Storm auf DualCore umzurüsten (und die alten bei ebay zu verkloppen *Scherz), jetzt mal ohne Scherz, war wohl nur ne Marketing Planung.

Aha, wollen also noch mal 4000 Opterone draufpacken, womit dann 52 Tf erreicht werden. Und sukzessive skaliert Red Storm bis 30000 CPUs, womit man dann bei 100 Tf ankäme, alles klar...
