Der VideoLAN VLC media player - ein universeller Multiformat-Mediaplayer, der nicht nur Filme bereits anspielen kann, während sie noch heruntergeladen werden (und deshalb bei Filesharing-Freunden sehr beliebt ist), sondern auch die Möglichkeit bietet, selbst Filme ins Netz zu streamen - ist auf den Projektservern bereits in der Versionn 0.8.6d erhältlich. Mit ihr wird eine Sicherheitslücke im Active X Plugin geschlossen.
Der VLC media player unterstützt bereits von Haus aus unzählige Audio- und Video-Codecs und wird für eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Betriebssysteme bereitgestellt. Eine Übersicht der bereits integrierten Codecs und der unterstützten Plattformen zeigt eine Feature-Übersicht. Der VLC media player wird als kostenlose Freeware unter der GNU General Public License angeboten.

Improvements in this release include better Video Output compatibility on Mac OS X and Apple Remote support on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Please note that Mac OS X 10.3.9 is no longer supported.
Windows 95/98/Me users: Please note that these versions of Windows are not officially supported. No VideoLAN developer uses any of these systems, which makes them hard to support. VLC should mostly work with them, but some incompatibilities might appear. You might need to download The Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems.
