"AMD said that the 8th-generation, 64-bit capable Athlon will perform 25% faster than the current Athlon XP processor on the same applications.
This increase in speed is attributed to the on-chip memory controller and improvements in the processor core.
AMD says that moving the memory controller onto the processor die reduces the latency, increasing the performance by as much as 20%. All of today's memory controllers are stored externally in the motherboard chipset."
