Die Firma Xiph.org - vielen vom Audiocodec Ogg ein Begriff - hat gestern seinen neuen Sprachcodec Speex in der Version 1.0 veröffentlicht. Der Codec ist auf die optimale Kompression von Sprache optimiert und ist streamingfähig. Er unterstützt variable Bitrate und unterschiedliche Bandbreiten in einem Stream. Wie Warp2Search heute mitteilt, hat Microsoft einen Patch für Windows XP Service Pack 1 released. Er trägt die Bezeichnung Q815411 und soll ein Memory Allocation Problem fixen, das mit SP1 eingeführt wurde und zu dramatisch verlängerten Ladezeiten von Programmen führen kann:
Symptoms: After you install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), your programs may take as much as ten times as long to start.
Cause: This problem may occur if the programs you run frequently allocate and deallocate large blocks of memory. Changes in Windows XP SP1 in the memory management system have caused this operation to take significantly longer than with pre-SP1 Windows XP.
Anwendern, die keine Probleme haben in dieser Disziplin, empfiehlt Microsoft den Patch nicht zu installieren, bis er in das nächste Service Pack eingeflossen ist.
Microsoft hat für alle Windows-Betriebssysteme ab Windows 98 einen Hotfix für die Multimedia-API DirectX 9.0 bereitgestellt. Damit sollen unter anderem einige Bugs bei Multiplayer-Games gefixt worden sein. Momentan ist DirectX 9.0a nur als Webinstaller verfügbar. Sobald eine downloadable Version erscheint, werden wir den Link nachreichen.
Update: Nachdem das 9.0a Update gestern für ein paar Stunden durch Microsoft offline genommen worden war, ist es heute wieder verfügbar - allerdings in veränderter Form nach binärem Filecompare! Laut Warp2Search waren Probleme mit dem ATI Catalyst Treiber 3.1 aufgetreten, die nun gefixt worden seien.

Die Open Source Web-Suite Mozilla ist nun als Version 1.3 verfügbar. Neben zahlreichen Bugfixes enthält der E-Mailclient nun einen lernfähigen Spamfilter, der nach der Bayes-Klassifizierung von Paul Graham ("A Plan for Spam") arbeitet. Die deutsche Übersetzung ist leider noch nicht fertig.

Der beliebte Downloadmanager Getright ist nun nach einer langen Betatest-Phase in der finalen Version 5.0 erschienen. Hier einige der wichtigsten Neuerungen:
"QuickSync" and "Server Synchronizer". Two features for quickly and easily gathering many files off a website. QuickSync for sites you want to process once; Server Synchronizer for sites you want to keep matched with your computer (can just download changed files!) Plus the GetRight Browser now does subdirectories too.
"Direct Cookies" and "Web Site Login". These let you have GetRight log into web sites that use cookies to tell if you're logged in or not (such as groups.yahoo.com). Now can download from those sites!
Improvements to Automatic Downloading. Can use classic "Priority" order for downloads, or new "Exact Ordering" to drag-and-drop files into the exact order you want. Separated limits for Files and Segments for better control of connections.
Added a simpler option for Automatic Segmenting/Accelerating; just do X segments per file if it meets a minimum size.

Wie Heise meldet, ist heute Opera in der Version 7.03 erschienen, die neue Version bietet neben einem Fix eines gestern erst bekannt gewordenen Sicherheitsfehlers auch noch andere, kleine Veränderungen. Weiterhin wird diese Version nun auch offiziell von Opera auf deutsch angeboten.
T-Online hat eine neue Version seines Softwarepaketes veröffentlicht. Das 60MB große Paket trägt die Versionsnummer 5.0 und wurde, neben der optischen Neugestaltung, mit vielen neuen Funktionen versehen, wie z.B. einem aus Firewall und Virenscanner bestehenden Sicherheitspaket.
VIA hat seine Treiber-Sammlung namens 4in1 Hyperion in einer neuen Version 4.46 aufgelegt. Neu hinzugekommen ist ein gefixter AGP-Treiber mit der Versionsnummer 4.41a.

Für mldonkey gibt es nun ein neues kleines Zusatzprogrämmchen. KMLDonkey bietet eine auf den KDE Desktop angepasste graphische Benutzeroberfläche.

Asus hat für die Mainboards der A7V266-Reihe (VIA KT266/KT266A) und das A7N266-VM Mainboard (nVidia nForce 220-D) neue Beta-BIOS Versionen released. Über Fixes ist nichts bekannt.
Erneut hat EPoX für dessen nForce2 Platine EP-8RDA+ ein BIOS veröffentlicht. Ob dadurch die aufgetretenen Probleme der kürzlich erschienenen Version ausgemerzt sind, ist noch nicht bekannt. Den chinesischen Schriftzeichen der EPoX-Site in Taiwan ist allerdings zu entnehmen, dass Athlon XP3000+ Support hinzugefügt wurde. An dieser Stelle allerdings noch einmal der Hinweis, dass ein BIOS-Update nur dann durchgeführt werden sollte, wenn zwingende Probleme existieren ("never touch a running system").
Die Traditionsdistribution Slackware hat den ersten Release Candidate der kommenden Version 9.0 zum Testen bereitgestellt.

Über den Grafikkartenherstellers PNY Technologies ist am Wochenende ein neuer Detonator Treiber aufgetaucht. Wie die ComputerBase berichtet soll dieser vornehmlich für die GeForceFX gedacht sein, aber trotzdem nVidia typisch auch mit allen anderen Grafikkarten der GeForce Serie funktionieren.
[...]wird man eine Performanceerhöhung von 7-15 Prozent unter 3DMark03 gegenüber den letzten Detonator Treibern der 42er Version feststellen. Bei 3DMark2001 ist eine leichte Verschlechterung eingetreten, bei Unreal Tournament 2003 eine Verbesserung im Flyby-Modus des Benchmarks. Da der letzte offizielle Detonator von nVidia von Anfang Dezember stammt, ist dieser Treiber sicher ein Weg in die richtige Richtung zu einem offiziellen Release.[...]
