Sun kehrt Intel den Rücken. Das haben wir bereits kürzlich berichtet. Künftig werden x86-kompatible Systeme ausschließlich mit den 32- und 64-Bit Prozessoren Opteron von AMD bestückt sein.
Im Zuge dessen hat Sun nun ein neues System vorgestellt, das auf dem heute vorgestellten AMD Opteron 252 bzw. AMD Opteron 852 fusst. Dabei scheint Sun gleich eine ordentliche Duftmarke setzen zu wollen, denn der neue Sun Fire V40z, bestückt mit AMD Opteron 852 Prozessoren, scheint gut zu laufen:
The Sun Fire V40z server achieved two new world-records for the 4-way x86 systems on integer and floating point throughput suites of the benchmark. The Sun Fire V20z server posted the new x86 world-record score on floating point intensive SPECfp2000 suite of the benchmark, as well as the best 2-way result on floating point throughput suite. The enhanced servers exhibit improved scalability and optimized performance for both floating point and integer performance, demonstrating up to a 25 percent improvement when compared with the previous results obtained on the same platforms(2).
Dabei soll der neue "Sonnengott" die Konkurrenz von IBM im Mittel um 23 Prozent abhängen. Ferner will Sun neben der Fähigkeit, 32-Bit und 64-Bit Programme auf den Betriebssystemen Solaris, Linux und Windows ausführen zu können, noch mit weiteren Features locken:
