Das freie Office-Paket OpenOffice.org ist in der Version 3.2 als Release Candidate 1 verfügbar. OpenOffice.org schickt sich an eine vollwertige Alternative zu Microsofts Office zu werden. Desweiteren ist das Paket nicht nur für Windows und Mac OS X, sondern auch für Linux, *BSD, Solaris und andere Systeme, zu haben. Es enthält die Programme Writer (Textverarbeitung), Calc (Tabellenkalkulation), Impress (Präsentationsprogramm), Draw (Grafikprogramm), Base (Datenbankprogramm) und Math (Formel-Editor) und deckt damit die meistgenutzten Programme eines Office-Pakets ab.
In der Version 3.2 wird es viele neue Funktionen geben. So soll das Paket nun wesentlich schneller starten, es soll u.a. besseren Support für proprietäre Dateiformate - insbesondere in Bezug auf Microsoft Office 2007 - geben, verbesserte Sortierungs- und Copy & Paste-Funktionen sollen auch integriert sein. Der kostenlose API-Wrapper Cygwin ist in der Version 1.7.1-1 verfügbar. Realtek hat am 22. Dezember neue Treiber für seine Netzwerkkarten-Chips der Baureihe RTL81xx veröffentlicht. Diese Chips sind auf vielen Mainboards und Netzwerkkarten verbaut und umfassen sowohl die 10/100 MBit (Fast Ethernet) als auch die 10/100/1000 MBit (Gigabit Ethernet) Schnittstellen für PCI und PCI-E.
Das Windows Treiber-Sortiment wurde nur teilweise aktualisiert, teilweise änderte sich dabei nichtmal die Versionsnummer, sondern nur das Datum der Veröffentlichung. Alle neuen Treiber sind unter Download aufgeführt. Über Änderungen gibt Realtek auch dieses Mal keine Auskunft. Desweiteren wurde bereits Ende November ein neuer Linux-Treiber für die PCI-E GbE-Chips zur Verfügung gestellt.

Das kostenlose Konfigurations-Tool xp-AntiSpy ist in der Version 3.97-7 erschienen. Mit dem Programm lassen sich viele Windows-spezifische Einstellungen vornehmen, die entweder über das ganze System verstreut sind oder teils auch gar nicht direkt geändert werden können. So läßt sich z.B. das von vielen als nutzlos und nervig empfundene Sicherheitscenter samt integrierter Firewall deaktivieren. Es lassen sich auch einige Dienste abschalten, die in den letzten Jahren mehrfach Angriffspunkte für Viren und Würmer boten.
Als sehr nützlich hat sich auch die vor einer Weile hinzugekommene Kategorie "Tweaks" erwiesen. Hier läßt sich z.B. der Suchassistent oder der Desktopbereinigungsassistent deaktivieren.
Bevor man mit dem Programm Einstellungen manipuliert, sollte man sich die Beschreibung der jeweiligen Option durchlesen und bei nicht Verstehen unbedingt die Finger davon lassen um ein eventuelles böses Erwachen zu verhindern.

Winamp steht in vier Geschmacksrichtungen zur Verfügung: Winamp Standard (Lite), Winamp Standard (Full), Winamp Standard (Bundle) und Winamp Pro - die Eigenschaften der jeweiligen Version sind hier übersichtlich dargestellt. Das kostenlose Tool CloneSpy ist in der Version 2.5 erschienen. Mit dem kleinen, englischsprachigen Programm lassen sich bequem doppelte Dateien auf der Festplatte aufspüren. Dabei findet es Dateien, die den gleichen Namen und/oder die gleiche Größe haben, ebenso spürt es 0-Byte Dateien auf.

Auch für den aktuellen ATI Catalyst 9.12 hat AMD wieder einen AGP Hotfix veröffentlicht. Nutzer einer AGP-Karte der 2000er, 3000er und 4000er Radeon Serien, die mit dem normalen Treiber nur die Fehlermeldung "No compatible hardware found" zu lesen bekommen, benötigen diesen Treiber um ihre Karte richtig installieren zu können.
Der Treiber steht für Windows ab Windows XP zur Verfügung.
Hinweis: AMD hat zwar die richtigen Dateien verlinkt, jedoch heißen die Links fälschlicherweise noch "Catalyst 9.11 Hotfix..."
AMD hat seinen ATI Catalyst 9.12 um einen Hotfix erweitert. Dieser beseitigt ein Problem, durch das der Mauszeiger unter Windows 7 zufällig vergrößert wird, verbessert die Leistung von OpenGL-Spielen und bringt Unterstützung für Eyefinity mittels CrossFireX sowie Unterstützung für OpenCL mit sich.
Der Hotfix steht für Windows ab Windows XP und für Linux zur Verfügung.

Bereits vor gut 3 Monaten hat Realtek noch vor dem Start von Windows 7 einen neuen Treiber in der Version 6305 für den längst eingestellten AC97 Audio-Codec veröffentlicht.Dieser wird zum Beispiel für den ALC650, wie er auf vielen nForce2-Mainboards verbaut war oder den ALC850, der auf älteren Athlon 64 Boards verwendet wurde, benötigt.
Leider hat Realtek weder ein Changelog, noch eine Readme dazu veröffentlicht.
Wie kürzlich von uns angekündigt wurde das freie Betriebssystem ReactOS, dessen Entwickler nichts weniger als volle Kompatibilität zu Microsoft Windows anstreben, in der Version 0.3.11 veröffentlicht. Mit den bald folgenden 0.4.x Versionen befindet sich das Projekt am Ende der Alpha-Phase und wird ab Version 0.5.x in die Beta-Phase übergehen. Große Änderungen gab es dieses mal am Memory Manager, welcher nun wesentlich stabiler ist und die ARM-Architektur unterstützt, und am Sound Stack, welcher nun Wave Recording, Mixer Support, das Ändern der Lautstärke und Abschalten des Tons unterstützt. Davon abgesehen gab es natürlich sehr viele mittelgroße und kleine Änderungen.
Bitte beachten Sie, dass sich ReactOS 0.3.11 noch in der alpha-Phase befindet und es derzeit nicht empfehlenswert ist, es für die tägliche Arbeit zu verwenden.

Die kostenlosen ATI Tray Tools von Ray Adams (guru3D) sind in der Version 1.6.9.1447 als Beta verfügbar. Das besonders für Übertakter geignete Programm richtet sich, wie der Name schon sagt, im Tray ein. Von da aus lassen sichen alle Funktionen ausführen und Einstellungen vornehmen. die ATT können auch als CCC-Ersatz verwendet werden.

Das freie Simulationsspiel OpenTTD ist in der Version 0.74 verfügbar. Wer Mitte der 90er schon am PC gespielt hat, kennt sicher noch Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Die freie Implementierung namens OpenTTD macht es möglich sich diesen Klassiker wieder einmal anzuschauen. Bisher benötigte man dafür immer noch die Original-Grafiken und -Sounds, also auch eine Lizenz des Originals. Mittlerweile sind aber die Projekte OpenGFX und OpenSFX, welche für freie Grafiken und Sounds sorgen, so weit, dass man ohne die Originaldateien auskommen sollte. Allerdings benötigt man dafür noch ein nightly/trunk build (siehe Download). In der neuen Version wurden viele Fehler im Spiel beseitigt.
Weiterhin ist OpenTTD nicht nur ein einfacher Klon, sondern bringt auch viele Neuerungen mit. So gibt es einen integrierten Multiplayer-Modus, der IP-basierte Spiele mit bis zu 255 Teilnehmern zulässt und auch dedizierte Server unterstützt. Darüberhinaus sind zahlreiche Erweiterungen im Spiel vorhandener Objekte verfügbar.
Im Gegensatz zum Original läuft OpenTTD nicht nur unter DOS und Windows, sondern auch unter Mac OS X, Linux, BSD, OS/2 und auf weiteren Plattformen.
Der freie Multi-Messenger Miranda IM wurde in der neuen Version 0.8.11 veröffentlicht. Seit Version 0.8.10 wurden mehrere Fehler behoben. Mit der neuen Version gibt es unter Windows 7 nun einen Ladebalken in der Taskbar bei Datei-Übertragungen. Desweiteren wurden ein Fehler, der unter ICQ zum Absturz des Programms führen konnte, und drei weitere unter Yahoo behoben.

Der OpenSource Mediaplayer VLC media player ist in Version 1.0.4 verfügbar. Das Programm unterstützt bereits von Haus aus unzählige Audio- und Video-Codecs und wird für eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Betriebssysteme bereitgestellt. Eine Übersicht der bereits integrierten Codecs und der unterstützten Plattformen zeigt eine Feature-Übersicht. Der VLC media player wird als Freie Software unter der GNU General Public License angeboten. Der Player hebt sich von vielen anderen Programmen unter anderem dadurch ab, dass er auch unvollständige oder gar noch im Download befindliche Videodateien abspielen kann. In dieser Version wurden vorwiegend Fehler auf x11-Plattformen behoben, die Änderungen betreffen besonders KDE, cairo-dock, XCB, v4l und FreeBSD, weshalb es bis jetzt auch noch keine Windows/Mac OS X Binärdateien gibt.

NVIDIA hat die Version 9.09.1112 seiner PhysX System Software veröffentlicht. Das für Privatnutzer kostenlose Defragmentierungs-Programm Disk Defrag von Auslogics ist in der Version 3.1.1.80 erschienen. Mit dem Programm lassen sich Fat32 und NTFS Partitionen defragmentieren. Neben dem Setup ist auch eine Portable Version (allerdings nur in englisch) verfügbar. Die neue Version behebt einige Fehler und ermöglicht nun das Ausschließen von SSDs beim Defragmentierungsprozess sowie die Fehlerüberprüfung von Festplatten.
Disk Defrag läuft unter Windows ab Windows XP bzw. Windows 2003, sowohl unter den 32Bit als auch unter den 64Bit Versionen.

Der freie Texteditor Notepad++ wurde in der Version 5.6 veröffentlicht. Das Programm ist ein mächtiger Ersatz für das Windows-eigene Notepad. So eignet sich Notepad++ besonders für Programmierer, da es Syntax-Hervorhebungen für eine Vielzahl von Programmiersprachen ermöglicht. In der neuen Version wurden einige Fehler beseitigt und neue Funktionen hinzugefügt, u.a. werden mit der neuen Version auch die Programmiersprachen COBOL, D, Gui4Cli, PowerShell und R unterstützt.

Mozilla hat den Release Candidate 2 seines freien Mail-Clients Thunderbird 3 veröffentlicht. Der schnellen Abfolge der RC-Veröffentlichungen zufolge möchte man bei Mozilla den Thunderbird 3 noch im Dezember in trockenen Tüchern gesichert wissen. Im RC2 wurden einige Fehler behoben u.a. ein Bug der zu hoher CPU-Last und Abstürzen führte.

Der freie Multiprotokoll-Messenger Pidgin wurde in der Version 2.6.4 veröffentlicht. Das Programm unterstützt grundsätzlich die Chat-Protokolle von AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber/XMPP, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, QQ, Lotus Sametime, SILC, SIMPLE, MySpaceIM, und Zephyr - weitere stehen über Plugins zur Verfügung. Mit dem Programm lassen sich viele Informationen über die verbaute Grafikkarte anzeigen u.a. auch aus Sensoren ausgelesene Daten wie Temperaturen, Taktraten oder Lüfterdrehzahlen. Die neue Version behebt einige Fehler, so läßt sich GPU-Z 0.3.8 nun z.B. auch wieder unter Windows 2000 nutzen. Desweiteren will man sich nun mit Hilfe der Nutzer an die Übersetzung in andere Sprachen machen.
