Nichtdestoweniger geht die Entwicklung an WinRAR weiter. So ist nun die neue Version 4.20 erschienen, die laut Fixliste zahlreiche CPU-Optimierungen enthalten soll. Die Optimierung auf AMDs neue Bulldozer-Prozessoren der FX-Serie scheint dabei auch nicht zu kurz gekommen zu sein, wie unser Test auf einem FX-6100 System zeigt:

• WinRAR 4.11 x64 = 2:02 min
• WinRAR 4.20 x64 = 1:03 min

Leider schweigen sich die Release-Notes über konkrete Optimierungen aus, daher ist es gut möglich, dass andere Prozessoren (ältere Architekturen und/oder weniger Kerne) nicht so positiv auf die neue Version reagieren. AMD FX-Usern jedoch kann WinRAR 4.20 nur wärmstens empfohlen werden; wann bekommt man schon mal einfach so die doppelte Verarbeitungsgeschwindigkeit von einer Software-Version auf die nächste? Version 4.20

1. Changes in RAR compression:

a) RAR general compression algorithm is optimized for better utilization of several processor cores. While some speed gain is possible even in single processor mode, best results are achieved in multi-core environment.

Speed gain depends on data type and average file size. Several cores are utilized more efficiently when compressing large files.

b) we had to increase memory requirements to achieve higher compression speed. General RAR compression algorithm allocates about 120 MB comparing to 40 MB in WinRAR 4.11;

c) RAR text compression algorithm cannot utilize several CPU cores efficiently, so its performance in multiprocessor environment is much lower than for general algorithm. Also its decompression speed is much lower than in general algorithm regardless of CPU number. So we decided to disable the text algorithm by default.

If you need maximum possible compression ratio for plain text data regardless of speed, you can enable the text compression in "Advanced compression parameter" dialog. Press "Compression..." button on "Advanced" page of archiving dialog to access it. You can also change this option permanently in default compression profile;

In the command line mode the text compression can be enabled with -mct switch;

d) "Fastest" (-m1) compression mode also supports several processor cores now. In 4.11 it could use only a single processor core.

2. RAR general decompression algorithm speed is slightly improved, though not to same extent as RAR compression. RAR decompression is not able to use several processor cores, so its performance does not depend on a number of cores.

3. Changes in ZIP compression:

a) now ZIP compression supports several processor cores resulting in noticeably higher performance in multi-core environment. Single CPU ZIP compression is also faster than in 4.11;

b) memory use for ZIP compression is increased to about 15 MB.

4. Recovery volume creating and processing can use several CPU cores resulting in higher speed. Though, typically hard drive seek speed is a limiting factor for recovery volumes, so this gain is most noticeable when working with solid state drive.

5. Now the allowed value for -mt switch is 1 - 32, not 0 - 16 as before.

6. "Find files" command can search data in 7-Zip archives. Previously "Find files" did not support .7z archive format.

7. Windows 2000 is not supported by WinRAR and WinRAR self-extracting modules anymore.

8. "Save current settings" button in "Advanced SFX options" dialog is now available only when converting an existing archive to SFX. Options saved with this button are applied only to convert to SFX operation.

If you create or update SFX archive, only SFX options stored in default compression profile are used. Options saved in "Advanced SFX options" dialog are ignored for these operations.

if archive number in generated name was 110 or larger;

h) WinRAR failed to display non-English file names in 7-Zip archives
properly if they used a non-default code page. It was the display
only problem, such names were unpacked correctly.

It is important to know that saved passwords are not encrypted
and anybody having access to your computer can view them.
Use "Organize passwords" feature only if your computer is
protected from unauthorized access;

c) "Use for all archives" option is available in password dialog
when unpacking several archives at once. You can utilize it
to apply an entered password to all archives.

If you use this option with an empty password, WinRAR will skip
all encrypted archives;

d) Unlike previous versions, the password from default compression
profile is not used for extraction.

If you wish to use the same password for all extracting archives,
press "Organize passwords..." button in the password dialog
and define a new password entry, specifying "*" file mask
in "Select for archives" field.

4. In Windows 7 WinRAR will display the total operation progress
also on WinRAR icon on Windows taskbar. You can disable it using
"Taskbar progress bar" option on "General" page of WinRAR settings.

5. Numerous Unicode support improvements allow to process non-English
file names more smoothly. These improvements include:

a) better Unicode handling in WinRAR in "Rename", "Convert",
"Find" and other commands, in folder tree panel, in password
request dialog and in many other parts of WinRAR interface;

b) correctly displayed Unicode names in WinRAR items in Explorer
context menus;

c) Unicode support in .lng files, making WinRAR localization
possible for Unicode only languages.

6. Changes in -x switch syntax. Now you can specify a wildcard
exclusion mask for folders. Such mask must have the trailing '\'
character, like -x*tmp*\ or -x*\temp\

7. New "Extract relative paths" option in "Advanced" part of extraction
dialog. If you browse some archive subfolder in WinRAR shell
and enable "Extract relative paths" option, the path part up to
and including the current subfolder will be removed from extracted
file paths.

For example, if you are inside of "Backup\MyData" archive folder
and extract "Images" folder, it will be extracted as "Images",
not as "Backup\MyData\Images".

This option is the new default extraction mode, but you can change
the default back to WinRAR 3.x style. Just select "Extract full paths"
and then press "Save settings" in "General" part of extraction dialog.

8. Windows 98, Windows Me and Windows NT are not supported by WinRAR
and WinRAR self-extracting modules anymore. Minimum Windows version
required for WinRAR 4.0 is Windows 2000.

9. If TAR, TAR.GZ or TAR.BZ2 archive contains symbolic or hard links
and if destination file system is NTFS, WinRAR will create these
links when unpacking such archive. WinRAR will create symbolic links
as symbolic and hard links as hard in Windows Vista and newer
and it will create all links as hard in older Windows.

If destination file system is FAT32 or any other not supporting
file links, WinRAR will skip links when unpacking TAR, TAR.GZ
and TAR.BZ2 archives.

10. Recovery volume processing involves less disk seek operations
resulting in higher performance.

11. You can select Windows 7 library in tree panel in extraction dialog
and WinRAR will use its default save location as the destination path.

12. "Report" command allows to select HTML, Unicode text and usual text
as output format for report file. Unlike previous WinRAR versions,
now WinRAR preservers Unicode characters in reports when using HTML
or Unicode text format. So non-English characters in file names
will be displayed properly in such reports.

13. Message list in GUI SFX archives displays only operation status
and error messages. It does not contain names of all extracted files
anymore. This change improves the speed and reduces memory requirements
for SFX archives containing a large number of files. Also it makes
easier to locate error messages, because they are not hidden among
extracted file names.

14. GUI SFX archives display "Extract" button instead of "Install"
if no "Setup" or "Presetup" commands are present in the archive
comment. If you prefer "Install" button, but do not need to
execute any setup programs, you can add "Setup=<>" command.

15. WinRAR displays the current percent above the operation progress bar
when repairing an archive containing the recovery record
and when processing recovery volumes.

16. WinRAR limits the maximum possible volume size to 4 GB minus 1 byte
when creating RAR volumes on a disk with FAT or FAT32 file system
in volume size autodetecting mode. These file systems do not support
4 GB and larger files.

17. If "Wait if other WinRAR copies are active" option is enabled
and WinRAR waits for another copy, you can press "Continue" button
in command progress window to force WinRAR to stop waiting.
So now "Continue" button allows to override the state of
"Wait if other WinRAR copies are active" option for current operation.

18. WinRAR displays one password request instead of two, when saving
an encrypted file back to RAR or ZIP archive after modifying it
in some external editor. Previous WinRAR versions usually requested
the password twice, both when extracting the original file
and archiving its modified copy. Only RAR archives with encrypted
file names were processed with the single password prompt.

19. New error code 10 ("no files") is added to list of error codes
returned in command line mode by RAR and WinRAR. This new code
can be returned by archive, extract, delete and repair commands.
It means that RAR did not find any files matched the specified
file or archive mask.

20. File name area in file overwrite dialog occupies several lines now.
It makes possible to display much longer names.

21. Now switch -ep3 converts not only disk letters, but also UNC paths.
So \\server\share will be converted to __server\share when archiving
and restored to the original \\server\share when extracting with -ep3.

  2. In den vorherigen Versionen wurde der Dialog immer auf dem ersten Monitor angezeigt.Der WinRAR-Befehl im Kontextmenü "Packen und als E-Mail versenden..." ergänzt nun den Archivnamen im Betreff der E-Mail. Vorherige Versionen ließen den Betreff leer.
  
  
  3. In RAR 3.91 konnten mit dem Schalter -x auch Verzeichnisse von der Archivierung ausgeschlossen werden, wenn die Dateimaske Wildcards enthielt, aber keinen Dateipfad.      1. WinRAR 3.91 meldete beim Öffnen eines leeren ZIP-Archivs irrtümlicherweise den Fehler "Unerwartetes Archivende.", wenn das ZIP-Archiv mit dem Befehl "Neu - WinRAR-ZIP-Archiv" im Kontextmenü des Windows Explorers erstellt wurde;
     2. War beim Entpacken mehrerer ZIP-Archive die Option "Archive löschen" aktiv und war eins der ZIP-Archive beschädigt, löschte WinRAR die Archive nach dem beschädigten nicht, auch wenn sie erfolgreich entpackt werden konnten;
     3. Passte eine Datei zu zwei unterschiedlichen Dateimasken in RarFiles.lst, konnte es passieren, dass WinRAR die letzte Dateimaske wählte. Normalerweise muss immer die erste Dateimaske gewählt werden, wenn die zu den Dateimasken passenden Dateinamen nicht ineinander enthalten sind.

Verbesserungen seit Version 3.80

Version 3.90 Beta 5

1. Behobene Fehler:

a) Der Befehl "Archive konvertieren" funtionierte nicht, wenn das ursprüngliche und das resultierende Archiv ein mehrteiliges Archiv war (Multi-Volumen) und im Namen des ursprünglichen Archivs chinesische, japanische oder koreanische Zeichen in DBCS-Kodierung vorkamen;

b) WinRAR fügte den Eintrag "Entpacken nach " nicht in das Windows-Kontextmenü für ZIP-Archive ein, wenn unter Windows "ZIP-komprimierte Ordner" aktiv war.

Version 3.90 Beta 4

1. Mit Hilfe der neuen Variablen 'Shutdown' im Registrierungsschlüssel 'Software\WinRAR\Policy' kann aus Sicherheitsgründen die Option "Nach dem Archivieren PC herunterfahren" deaktiviert werden.

2. Der Programm-Kompatibilitätsassistent unter Windows 7 zeigt nun nach dem Schließen von selbstentpackenden Archiven, die von dieser Beta erstellt wurden, nicht mehr fälschlicherweise die Meldung "Dieses Programm wurde möglicherweise nicht richtig installiert" an.

3. Verbesserung der Kompatibilität bei der Einstellung von hohen DPI-Zahlen in den Anzeige-Einstellungen unter Windows.

4. Behobene Fehler:

a) Die Beta 3 zeigte im Kontextmenü keine Archivierungsbefehle an, wenn der Anwender mehrere Archive auswählte;

b) Die Beta 3 behandelte 'LongLink'-Einträge in TAR Archiven nicht korrekt;

c) Die Reparatur eines Archivs mit Hilfe von Wiederherstellungsinformationen funktionierte in allen vorherigen Beta-Versionen nicht richtig;

d) In der Beta 3 konnte es passieren, dass für archivierten Dateien ohne Dateiendungen das Ordnersymbol angezeigt wurde.

Version 3.90 Beta 3

1. WinRAR zeigt nun beim Entpacken von 7z-Archiven mit verschlüsselten Dateinamen nur einmal den Dialog zur Eingabe des Passwortes an.

2. Weitere Verbesserungen der Geschwindigkeit bei der Explorer-Erweiterung. Das Kontextmenü von WinRAR erscheint auch bei der Arbeit mit Tausenden ausgewählten Dateien sehr schnell und reagiert schneller auf Benutzeraktionen.

3. Behobene Fehler:

a) Es konnte passieren, dass WinRAR bei einigen selbstextrahierenden ZIP-Archiven als Archivkommentar zufällige Zeichen anzeigte, obwohl diese SFX-ZIP-Archive keine Archivkommentare enthielten;

b) Der Schalter -ed verhinderte nicht das Entpacken leerer Verzeichnisse;

c) Bei der Angabe des Schalters -n konnte es passieren, dass WinRAR einige Unterverzeichnisse nicht komprimierte, die in der Kommandozeile angegeben wurden;

d) Beim Entpacken mancher zerstörter RAR-Archive konnte WinRAR abstürzen.

Version 3.90 Beta 2

1. Die Zeit zwischen einem Rechtsklick auf ausgewählte Dateien im Windows Explorer und der Anzeige des Kontextmenüs wurde verkürzt. Diese Verzögerung macht sich insbesondere dann bemerkbar, wenn man auf mehrere Tausend ausgewählte Dateien mit der rechten Maustaste klickt.

2. Behobene Fehler:

a) Bei der 64-Bit-Version von WinRAR funktionierte das Drag&drop einer Datei über ein existierendes Archiv im Windows Explorer nicht;

b) Die 64-Bit-Explorer-Erweiterung stürzte ab, wenn man mit der rechten Maustaste den Ordner "Autostart" anklickte und den Befehl "Öffnen" oder "Explorer" auswählte;

c) In der Beta 1 der 64-Bit-Version von WinRAR wurden beim Befehl "Archive nach Viren durchsuchen" einige 32-Bit-Antivirenprogramme nicht erkannt, die von der 32-Bit-Version von WinRAR erkannt wurden;

d) Die Beta 1 hängte sich auf, wenn auf der Befehlszeile ein Verzeichnis als Maske angegeben wurde, das gleichzeitig ganz von der Archivierung ausgeschlossen wurde: 'rar a -xverzeichnis archiv verzeichnis';

e) Manchmal hängte sich die Beta 1 beim Erstellen eines neuen RAR-Archivs auf, wenn ein Archivkommentar oder eine der erweiterten NTFS-Optionen angegeben wurde;

f) Der ZIP-Verschlüsselungs-Code wurde auf den aktuellen Stand gebracht. Er enthält die neusten Fehlerberichtigungen von InfoZip;

g) Die 64-Bit-Version speicherte das Layout der Symbolleiste nicht.

Version 3.90 Beta 1

1. Eine WinRAR-Version für Windows x64 ist nun verfügbar. Falls Sie eine 64-Bit-Version von Windows einsetzen, wird dringend empfohlen, die 64-Bit-Version von WinRAR zu installieren. Sie bietet eine höhere Geschwindigkeit und eine bessere Integration in den Windows Explorer als die 32-Bit-Version.

2. Die RAR-Kompressionsgeschwindigkeit wurde bei Rechnern mit mehreren Kernen bzw. mehreren Hauptprozessoren verbessert. Die Verbesserung ist besonders unter den Betriebssystemen Windows Vista und Windows 7 wahrnehmbar.

3. Die Option "Doppelten Verzeichnisnamen am Ende des Zielverzeichnisses entfernen" im Dialog "Einstellungen - Komprimierung" wurde durch die allgemeinere Option "Überflüssige Verzeichnisnamen am Ende des Zielverzeichnisses entfernen" ersetzt. Diese Option entfernt beim Entpacken eines Archivs mit Hilfe des Kontextmenü-Befehls "Entpacken nach
Verzeichnis" überflüssige Verzeichnisse mit dem Namen des Archivs aus dem Zielverzeichnispfad, wenn sich im Wurzelverzeichnis des Archivs nur ein Verzeichnis und keine Dateien befinden.

4. Änderungen im Dialog "Entpacken: Zielverzeichnis und Optionen":

a) Mit der Schaltfläche "Neues Verzeichnis" kann ein neues Verzeichnis in dem derzeit ausgewählten Verzeichnis erstellt werden;

b) Mit der Taste F2 kann das gerade ausgewählte Verzeichnis im Verzeichnisbaum umbenannt werden;

c) Die Taste F5 bewirkt eine Aktualisierung des Verzeichnisbaums;

d) Die Taste Entf löscht das ausgewählte Verzeichnis im Verzeichnisbaum.

5. Falls in der Spalte "Geändert am" in der Dateiliste der WinRAR-Oberfläche die Sekunden angezeigt werden sollen, muss die Option "Sekunden anzeigen" im Dialog "Einstellungen - Dateiliste" aktiviert werden.

6. Mit den Optionen der Gruppe "Erkennung von SFX-Archiven aktiv für" im Dialog "Einstellungen/Integration/Kontextmenüeinträge" können Sie für die Explorer-Kontextmenüs festlegen, auf welchen Datenträgern bzw. Laufwerken .exe-Dateien untersucht werden, ob es sich um selbstextrahierende (SFX-) Archive handelt.
Wenn Sie zum Beispiel sehr häufig mit der rechten Maustaste auf .exe-Dateien klicken, die sich auf langsamen Netzlaufwerken befinden, können Sie die Option "Netzlaufwerke" deaktivieren, um die Wartezeit bis zur Anzeige des Kontextmenüs zu verringern.

7. Bei der Sortierung von Dateien nach ihren Namen in der Dateiliste der WinRAR-Oberfläche wird nun dieselbe neue logische Dateisortierung angewendet wie im Windows Explorer, der bei Ziffern in Dateinamen annimmt, dass es sich um numerische Werte handelt. Deshalb werden Dateien werden nun so sortiert: 1.txt, 2.txt, 10.txt statt 1.txt, 10.txt, 2.txt. Dieses neue Verhalten bei der Sortierung ist unter Windows XP Service Pack 2 und neuer verfügbar.

8. Die Tastenkombination Strg+W schließt nun sowohl das Hauptfenster von WinRAR als auch das Betrachter-Fenster in WinRAR. Die Tastenkombination für den Befehl "Als Windows-Text anzeigen" im WinRAR-Betrachter wurde von Strg+W auf Strg+I geändert.

9. Der neue Schalter -r- schaltet die Rekursion ab. Der Befehl 'rar a -r- archiv verzeichnisname' fügt nur das leere Verzeichnis mit dem Namen "verzeichnisname" zum Archiv hinzu und ignoriert dessen Inhalt.
Enthält der Verzeichnisname keine Wildcards, fügt RAR standardmäßig nicht nur das Verzeichnis sondern auch dessen Inhalt zum Archiv hinzu, obwohl der Schalter -r nicht angegeben wurde.

10. Wird der neue Schalter -ai beim Entpacken verwendet, so ignoriert RAR die im Archiv gespeicherten Dateiattribute. Stattdessen erhalten die entpackten Dateien die Attribute, die standardmäßig durch das Betriebsystem für neu erstellte Dateien vergeben werden.

11. Wird der Dateiname beim Befehl "cw" nicht angegeben, schickt die Konsolenversion von RAR die Archivkommentardaten an stdout.

12. Beim Packen von Daten von stdin mit dem Schalter -si[Name] setzt RAR die Zeit der letzten Änderung im dazugehörigen Archiveintrag nun auf die aktuelle Systemzeit. Vorherige Versionen von RAR setzten dieses Feld nicht, was unsinnige Werte für die Zeit der letzten Änderung beim Packen von Daten von stdin zur Folge hatte.

13. Die Meldung beim Platzieren des Mauszeigers über dem WinRAR-Icon (Tooltip) im Infobereich des Systems (Tray) enthält nun auch den Archivnamen. Vorher wurde bei Archivierungsvorgängen nur die verbleibende Zeit und der Gesamtfortschritt in Prozent angezeigt.

14. Mit Hilfe der neuen Variablen 'Shutdown' im Registrierungsschlüssel 'Software\WinRAR\Policy' kann aus Sicherheitsgründen die Option "Nach dem Archivieren PC herunterfahren" deaktiviert werden.

15. Verbesserungen der Geschwindigkeit bei der Explorer-Erweiterung.

17. Behobene Fehler:

a) WinRAR konnte in manchen Fällen tar- or tar.gz-Archive nicht öffnen, die eine Datei größer als 8 GB enthalten;

b) Das WinRAR-Kontextmenü funktionierte nicht richtig unter den Beta-Versionen von Windows 7, wenn die Anzeige der Icons angeschaltet war und eine Datei im Windows-7-Library-Ordner angeklickt wurde;

c) In den vorherigen WinRAR-Versionen war es nicht möglich, Dateien umzubenennen, die fünf oder mehr aufeinanderfolgende Leerzeichen im Dateinamen enthielten. Aus Sicherheitsgründen werden diese Leerzeichen in der WinRAR-Oberfläche nicht angezeigt, weil damit die wirkliche Dateiendung verborgen werden kann. Diese Sicherheitsmaßnahme war jedoch der Grund dafür, dass der Befehl zum Umbenennen nicht richtig funktionierte.

1. Added support for ZIP archives containing Unicode file names in UTF-8 format. When creating ZIP archive, WinRAR stores names in Unicode only if they cannot be stored correctly using the current single byte character set.
2. Added decompression support for WinZip AES encrypted ZIP archives.
3. Improved Unicode support for RAR and ZIP archive names.
4. "Ask before overwrite" and "Skip existing files" update modes are now available in archiving dialog. They allow to specify WinRAR behavior when updating already existing files in archive. Unlike already available "Fresh existing files only" and "Add and update files", these new modes ignore file date and compare only file names.

Command line equivalents of these modes are:
a) switch -o enables "Ask before overwrite" archiving mode;
b) switch -o- enables "Skip existing files" archiving mode;
c) switch -o+ enables "Overwrite all" mode (default for archiving).
5. New "Add to context menu" option in "Profile parameters" dialog. If this option is on, the profile name will be displayed in Explorer context menus allowing to activate a profile from context menu.

6. New -cp switch allows to select a compression profile in command line mode. It is supported only by GUI WinRAR.exe, not by rar.exe.
7. New "Options" page of archiving dialog contains the group of settings modifying the behavior of "Delete files after archiving" option from "General" page:
a) Delete files. Delete files normally like in previous WinRAR versions.
b) Move files to Recycle Bin. Deleted files are placed to Recycle Bin.

Command line equivalent of this option is -dr switch.
c) Wipe files. Before deleting file data are overwritten by zero bytes to prevent recovery of deleted files.

Command line equivalent of this option is -dw switch.

All these options have an effect only if "Delete files after archiving" is on. You can enable any of these options in the default compression profile to change the default behavior of "Delete files after archiving".

8. WinRAR "Extraction path and options" dialog is now resizable. You can use the mouse to drag its border to the desired size and provide more space for folder tree pane. WinRAR will store new dimensions of this dialog.
9. New "Update" SFX script command and "Update mode" group of options in "Update" page of "Advanced SFX options" dialog. These command and options allow to check time and implement file time based updating;
10. SFX script "Shortcut" command and "Add shortcut..." command in "Advanced SFX options" dialog now allow to specify an icon file containing an icon associated with shortcut.
11. New "Wipe temporary files" option in "Settings/Security" dialog provides more secure, though slower, way to delete temporary WinRAR files.
