Viele Nutzer setzen, freiwillig oder unfreiwillig, noch auf Windows 98 (SE). Die Gründe dafür sind vielfältig. So muss der eine das betagte System noch nutzen, weil eine dringend benötigte Software und/oder Hardware nicht unter neueren Windows-Versionen läuft, während der andere einen Retro-Rechner für ältere Spiele betreibt oder sich schlicht und ergreifend durch Microsoft's Produktpolitik gegängelt fühlt - die Produktaktivierung bei jeder Installation kann gerade für Bastler schon sehr nervig sein.
Nun hat Microsoft den Support für Windows 98 (SE) / Me bereits am 11. Juli 2006 und damit jegliche Sicherheits-Updates eingestellt. Doch das hindert einige fähige Entwickler nicht daran inoffizielle Updates bereitzustellen. Besonders aktiv sind hier Mitglieder des Microsoft Software Forum Networks (MSFN), Unterforum Windows 9x Member Projects, wo zahlreiche Optimierungen und Fixes bereitgestellt werden.
Da Internet Explorer bzw Outlook Express 6 SP1 unter Windows 2000/XP weiterhin mit Updates versorgt werden, ist es möglich die erneuerten Dateien zu extrahieren und unter Windows 98 (SE) zu installieren. In diesem Fall sind also offizielle Updates und inoffizielle Anpassungen enthalten. Das deutsche Update Paket ist nun in der aktualisierten Version 2.8a auf www.nandlstadt.com verfügbar. Weiterhin werden auf der Seite ein inoffizielles Service Pack für Windows 98 (SE) und ein universeller USB 2.0 Treiber (NUSB) für Windows 98 SE, mit dem nahezu alle MP3-Player und USB-Sticks erkannt werden, zur Verfügung gestellt.
Die Installation ist bezüglich der Sicherheitslage unter Win98(SE) zu empfehlen, auch wenn Firefox und Thunderbird verwendet werden, sind doch einige Komponenten des IE gleichzeitig Komponenten des ganzen Systems.
Hinweis: Es handelt sich hierbei um kein offizielles Update-Pack von Microsoft.

Mit der Beta 1 hat die Mozilla Foundation eine Vorabversion des Firefox 3.6 zum Download freigegeben. Firefox 3.6 basiert auf der Version 1.9.2 der Gecko Rendering Engine.
Wie üblich empfiehlt Mozilla die Beta-Version nur Entwicklern und Testern, also nicht für Produktivumgebungen. Außerdem weist man darauf hin, dass einige Webseiten nicht korrekt dargestellt werden und einige Addons nicht funktionieren könnten.

Die BOINC-Software wurde für alle Plattformen (Windows, Mac OS X und Linux) in der Version 6.10.17 veröffentlicht. Damit ist die seit August 2008 in Entwicklung befindliche 6.10er Linie als Finalversion verfügbar. In der aktuellen Version werden nun auch ATI GPUs unterstützt. Der kostenlose Browser Opera vom gleichnamigen Hersteller wurde in der Version 10.01 veröffentlicht. Damit gibt es knapp zwei Monate nach der Veröffentlichung der Hauptversion 10 ein erstes Sicherheits-/Stabilitäts-Update. Opera Software hatte am 01.09.2009 Opera 10.00 veröffentlicht und wichtige Neuerungen eingeführt. So wurden z.B. endlich eine Auto-Update-Funktion und die neue Presto-Engine 2.2, welche vor allem mit Javascript deutlich schneller umgehen soll, integriert.
Opera läuft unter Windows ab Windows 98, Linux, FreeBSD und Solaris, ältere Versionen sind auch für andere Betriebssysteme verfügbar.

Die Möglichkeit, Absturzmeldungen neu zu senden, wurde hinzugefügt (Bug 378528).
Wenn die Funktion "Neueste Chronik löschen" verwendet wurde, wurden anschließend auf einigen SSL-Seiten nicht mehr alle Bilder und Webseiten-Stile geladen, bis die Seite neu geladen wurde (Bug 480619).
Die freie Internetsuite Seamonkey ist in der Version 2.0 erschienen. Die neue Version baut nun auf Firefox 3.5 auf und enthält zahlreiche Änderungen. So wurde, wie nicht anders zu erwarten, auch der Support für Windows 95, 98, Me und NT4 eingestellt.
Seamonkey ist die Weiterentwicklung der Mozilla Application Suite und besteht aus den Komponenten Navigator, MailNews, Composer, Adressbuch, IRC-Client, Entwickler-Werkzeuge. Das von Mozilla unterstützte Projekt entstand nachdem Mozilla selbst die Entwicklung der kompletten Internetsuite aufgegeben hatte um sich mehr auf die Einzelanwendungen zu konzentrieren.

SeaMonkey uses the same internal platform as Firefox 3.5.4 now. Due to this change SeaMonkey is now much closer to Firefox as far as user profiles, add-ons and functionality of user interface elements are concerned.
The default location of user profiles has changed. Legacy profiles, e.g. from SeaMonkey 1.x, or even Thunderbird profiles, can be migrated automatically, excluding third-party add-ons (extensions and themes). The old profile will not be touched (instead, copies are made).
The new Add-on Manager allows to install, update, disable and remove extensions (add-ons), themes and plugins using the same mechanisms Firefox uses. This should ease extension management and development considerably.
Session restore (crash recovery) has been added. Now, when SeaMonkey crashes, all your browser windows and tabs will be restored automatically or on request (including data entered in web forms!). In addition, users can select to always restore the browser windows and tabs from their last open session when starting SeaMonkey.
Reopening closed browser windows (Undo Close Window) is now possible.
History is now stored in a better database solution, so that it can easily keep more information, and the location bar determines which addresses to autocomplete and/or show in the drop down menu with a smarter algorithm based on what you type, searching in both URL and title of visited pages by default.
Toolbars in the browser, main MailNews and message compose windows are now fully customizable, including icon size and whether to display icons and/or text for every major toolbar, all available via their context menus.
The MailNews component now includes support for reading RSS and Atom feeds. The browser detects feeds offered by web pages, can preview them and offers different ways to subscribe to them.
New IMAP accounts will now keep local offline copies by default, as a part of a number of speed improvements when working with IMAP. Synchronization can be disabled per account or for individual folders, and limited to the most recent messages in the Synchronization & Storage settings.
Tabbed Mail enables accounts, folders and even single messages to be opened in tabs inside the Mail & Newsgroups window. This feature also enables the Lightning extension to be installed into SeaMonkey for calendering functionality.
Password Manager was switched to an improved version, allowing easier searching, and notification bars replacing modal dialogs for remembering logins.
Download Manager has been completely reworked, including support for cross-session resumable downloads.
A new form manager replaces all previous web form management, and automatically keeps a record of what you type into forms and presents you these options in a drop-down list when you come back.
Cookie Manager has been improved and now allows searching for cookies by site and cookie name.
Gecko, the rendering engine used in SeaMonkey, has seen many improvements since the version used in the last stable release. Changes range from a better graphics backend (Cairo/Thebes) to improved support for fonts, CSS, DOM and JavaScript. SeaMonkey 2.0 passes the Acid2 test and most of Acid3 and includes all the HTML5 and other new web-facing features also included in Firefox 3.5, such as audio/video elements, downloadable fonts and JIT-compiled JavaScript.
Most of the icons in the default theme have been exchanged for newer images that fit better with the look of modern desktop environments.
The default theme on Mac OS X was completely renewed to better fit with the look of Leopard and Snow Leopard.
For extension developers, SMILE is introduced, making interfaces known from FUEL and STEEL also available in SeaMonkey.
Support for Windows 95, 98, Me and NT 4 was dropped. GTK 2.10 or higher is now required on Linux/UNIX. Support for Mac OS X 10.3 ("Panther") and 10.2 ("Jaguar") was also dropped.

Das freie Datenträgerverschlüsselungs-Programm TrueCrypt wurde am 21. Oktober in der Version 6.3 veröffentlicht. Mit dem Programm lassen sich Festplatten bzw. Teile davon und Wechseldatenträger verschlüsseln. Neuerungen sind u.a. der volle Support für Windows 7 und Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

Das kostenlose Hardware/Windows-Diagnoseprogramm PC Wizard von CPUID ist in der Version 2009.1.91 verfügbar. Es wartet ähnlich wie Everest, HWiNFO32 und SIW mit vielen Funktionen der Kategorien Hardware Information, System Information und System Benchmarks auf.
Bei Problemen mit CPUID-Produkten kann im offiziellen Forum (Link s. u.) direkt mit den Entwicklern kommuniziert werden, diese lassen einem auch schonmal eine speziell angepasste Beta-Version zukommen.

Der freie (S)FTP/SCP-Client WinSCP ist in der Version 4.2.4 beta verfügbar. WinSCP ist ein grafischer Client für die Übertragung von Dateien im Internet/Netzwerk mittels der Dateitransferprotokolle FTP, SFTP und SCP. Die Verbindungen werden dabei verschlüsselt über Secure Shell (SSH-1/SSH-2) realisiert.
Dem Nutzer stehen zwei Benutzeroberflächen zur Auswahl, wovon eine der Explorer- und die andere der Ansicht des Norton Commander ähnelt. Dadurch können Dateien, einzeln oder gebündelt, bequem vom Client auf den Server und umgedreht kopiert, verschoben bzw. gelöscht werden.
WinSCP funktioniert unter allen Windows-Versionen ab Windows 95 und wird als Setup, Portable Executable und Source angeboten. Das letzte stable Release ist 4.1.9 und steht auch unter "Download" zur Verfügung.

Das kostenlose Konfigurations-Tool xp-AntiSpy ist nach drei veröffentlichten Beta-Versionen nun in der Version 3.97-4 erschienen. Mit dem Programm lassen sich viele Windows-spezifische Einstellungen vornehmen, die entweder über das ganze System verstreut sind oder teils auch gar nicht direkt geändert werden können. So läßt sich z.B. das von vielen als nutzlos und nervig empfundene Sicherheitscenter samt integrierter Firewall deaktivieren. Es lassen sich auch einige Dienste abschalten, die in den letzten Jahren mehrfach Angriffspunkte für Viren und Würmer boten.
Als sehr nützlich hat sich auch die vor einer Weile hinzugekommene Kategorie "Tweaks" erwiesen. Hier läßt sich z.B. der Suchassistent oder der Desktopbereinigungsassistent deaktivieren.
Bevor man mit dem Programm Einstellungen manipuliert, sollte man sich die Beschreibung der jeweiligen Option durchlesen und bei nicht Verstehen unbedingt die Finger davon lassen um ein eventuelles böses Erwachen zu verhindern.
Das Programm funktioniert unter Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 und seit dieser Version auch ordnungsgemäß unter Windows 7. Bis zur Version 3.96-6 lief es auch unter Windows 9x/Me.
Ein Changelog steht leider bislang nicht zur Verfügung. Der Autor des Programms vermeldet lediglich einige Fehlerbehebungen und die vollständige Windows 7 Kompatibilität als Änderungen.
AMD hat zwei Technologie-Demos für Grafikkarten der ATI Radeon HD 5800er Serie bereitgestellt, die die Fähigkeiten der neuen Karten demonstrieren sollen. Die Demos setzen außerdem Windows 7, ATI Catalyst™ 9.9 oder höher, einen Dual- oder Quad-Core Prozessor und mindestens 2 GB Hauptspeicher voraus. Für alle die diese Hardwareanforderungen nicht erfüllen können, werden die Technologie-Demos auch als Video bereitgestellt.

Die russische Unigine Corporation hat auf Basis ihrer 3D-Engine Unigine einen Benchmark mit dem Namen Heaven veröffentlicht, der Unterstützung von DirectX 11 bietet. Erhältlich ist momentan nur die Windows-Version, aber eine Portierung nach Linux soll bald folgen.
Für den Benchmark setzt Unigine mindestens eine AMD ATI Radeon HD 2xxx oder eine NVIDIA GeForce 7xxx Grafikkarte und 256 MB Grafikspeicher voraus. Bestimmte Dinge wie Hardware Tessellation bedingen natürlich eine entsprechende DirectX 11 Grafikkarte.

Paint.NET - eine Freeware-Bildbearbeitungssoftware für Windows, die zuerst an der Washington State University und nun bei Microsoft entwickelt wird - ist in der Version v3.5 Beta 3 erschienen.
Gegenüber der zweiten Beta wurden folgende Verbesserungen vorgenommen:

Für die Verwendung von Paint.NET wird Windows 7 empfohlen, es funktioniert aber auch problemlos mit Windows XP ab SP2, Windows Vista oder Windows Server (2003 SP1 oder neuer). Zusätzlich wird ein installiertes Microsoft .NET Framework benötigt (.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 bei Microsoft).
Das Standard-Programm zur Darstellung von PDF-Dateien, der Reader von Adobe, ist in der Version 9.2 erschienen. Vorwiegend wurden dabei insgesamt 29 Sicherheitslücken geschlossen; wobei das PDF-Format inzwischen insgesamt erheblich für Angriffe auf User verwendet wird, indem kompromittierender Schadcode in die Dateien eingefügt wird. Laut Erhebungen des Anti-Viren Software-Herstellers F-Secure im Sommer diesen Jahres soll das PDF-Format mittlerweile sogar der Träger Nummer 1 sein, wenn es darum geht, Schadcode "an den Mann zu bringen".

Am 9. Oktober hat Microsoft für die x64-Versionen von Windows Vista, Server 2008 und 7 ein Update bereitgestellt, das die Energie-Effizienz von AMD-Prozessoren verbessern soll. Offenbar ist es bei diesen Versionen so, dass der Prozessor nicht in den Betriebsmodus C1E geschickt werden kann. Das ist ein spezieller Stromspar-Modus, den die neueren AMD-Prozessoren unterstützen. Aufgrund des Verhaltens von Windows gelingt dies bei den AMD-Systemen laut Microsoft bisher jedoch nicht:

Therefore, the local APIC timer runs in the C1 sleep state continuously at a constant rate regardless of performance state (P-state) transitions. This behavior causes the computer to consume unnecessary power. However, AMD processors support an inactive state for when the CPU APIC timer is not being used. Therefore, an AMD processor can enter the low-power C1E state. This low-power state saves up to an additional 10 percent in power.

SystemRescueCd, eine auf Gentoo basierende Linux Boot-CD, ist in der Version 1.3.1 erschienen. Mit der CD können zahlreiche Aufgaben rund um das Bearbeiten und Erstellen von Partitionen vorgenommen werden. Dabei werden zahlreiche Dateisysteme unterstützt.
Zu diesen gehören Ext2/Ext3, ReiserFS, Reiser4, XFS, JFS, VFAT, NTFS, ISO9660, Samba und NFS.

Für die teils schon etwas älteren Chipsätze der nForce 5 Serie ohne IGP hat NVIDIA letzte Woche ein neues Treiber-Paket für Windows XP veröffentlicht, nachdem bereits Mitte September ein Paket für Windows Vista erschienen war. Folgende Chipsätze werden unterstützt:
Vergangene Woche hat NVIDIA sein Treiber-Paket für die Chipsätze mit integrierter Grafik auf den letzten Stand gebracht. Die XP-Treiber tragen nun die Version 15.45, die Vista und Windows 7 Treiber 15.49. Beide sind WHQL-zertifiziert und datieren auf den 1. Oktober 2009. Folgende Chipsätze werden im speziellen unterstützt:
NVIDIA hat für seine GeForce-Grafikkarten und IGPs einen neuen offiziellen Referenztreiber veröffentlicht. Er trägt die Versionsnummer 191.07, ist WHQL-zertifiziert und auf den 5. Oktober 2009 datiert. Folgende Verbesserungen gibt es:

Das kostenlose Tool CPU-Z ist ein bei Bastlern und Hardware-Redakteuren anerkanntes und häufig verwendetes Tool, um Taktfrequenz, VCore, Steppings, Cache-Größe etc. aktueller x86-Prozessoren abzufragen.
Aber auch das beste Tool kann nur so viel, wie ihm an Informationen mitgegeben wurde. Und so kam es, dass die letzte offiziell zum Download angebotene Version 1.52.2 die neuen AMD Athlon II X2 Prozessoren mit Regor-Kern bzw. den AMD Sempron falsch bzw. gar nicht zuordnete. So dichtete das Tool dem AMD Sempron 140 die Revision BL-C2 an, obgleich laut AMD Revision Guide und der ausgelesenen CPUID dort DA-C2 hätte stehen müssen.

Daher haben wir uns gestern mit dem Autor von CPU-Z, Franck Delattre, in Verbindung gesetzt und mit ihm zusammen in ein paar Schriftwechsel ein wenig aufgeräumt. Das Ergebnis ist eine neue Version 1.52.4, die nun auch in der Lage ist Regor-basierende CPUs korrekt zu erkennen, sowie dem Sempron 140 die korrekte Revision und Codenamen zuzuordnen.
Neue Interimsversion mit korrekter Erkennung
Allerdings ist das Build derzeit noch als Interimsversion unterwegs, weshalb die Validierung noch deaktiviert ist. Dennoch hat uns Franck dankenswerter Weise gestattet die neue Version schon mal zu verteilen wer sie denn haben mag, ehe die Fixes irgendwann in die offizielle Version einfließen werden.
