AMD will DivX "AMD64" Bundle mit Athlon 64

Wie <a href="http://www.divxnetworks.com/press/pr_detail.php?pr_id=74" TARGET="b">DivXNetworks</a> heute mitteilt plant AMD offenbar eine auf den Athlon 64 optimierte DivX Version für "Windows XP 64-Bit Edition for Opteron and Athlon 64" im Bundle mit dem neuen Prozessor zu verkaufen. <a href="http://www.planet3dnow.de/cgi-bin/newspub/viewnews.cgi?category=2&id=1062579232">DivX</A> ist eine beliebte, auf MPEG4 basierende Video-Encoder und -Decoder-Software. AMD hat bereits eine Lizenz erworben. Das Software-Paket soll als "Dr. DivX: AMD64 Edition" vertrieben und zusammen mit den boxed-Versionen des zulängst <a href="http://www.planet3dnow.de/cgi-bin/newspub/viewnews.cgi?category=1&id=1064332862">vorgestellten</a> Athlon 64 und Athlon 64 FX verkauft werden. klingt zwar lustig, ist aber falsch :

und in welche richtung geht das?

gleiche quali bei geringerer prozi last ?

oder höhere quali bei gleicher schwerer last?

An der Quali wird sich durch eine Prozessoroptimierung nichts ändern aber an der Geschwindigkeit.

auf jedem Fall ein guter Schachzug, da viele Leute ja DIVX benutzen und das macht die Sache natürlich noch interessanter. Also ich denke, ende des Jahres steht auch bei mir ein a64 vor der tür Aber ich hoffe die Preise werden bis dahin menschlicher.

bin mal gespannt wie sich der so im MPEG 4 Bereich wohlfühlende P4 dann dagegen schlägt.

Wie bitte soll das gehen?

Alle AMD64 CPUs befinden sich unter dem aktuellen WinXP/W2K zu 100% im 32bit Modus. Damit überhaupt von einer Anwendung in den 64bit Modus geschaltet werden kann und damit die 64bit Einheit genutzt werden kann muss man ein 64bit OS haben.

Bleibt also nur Linux.

Ausserdem dürfte der 64bit Modus in einer gemischten 32bit/64bit Umgebung wegen dem ständigen sichern/wiederherstellen aller 64bit Register und umschalten auf den 32bit Modus sogut wie garnix bringen solange neben den 64bit Anwendungen weitere 32bit Anwendungen laufen.

Das maximum was heute als ein "AMD64 Divx" an Optimierungen haben kann ist die Optimierung auf SSE2 und auf den 2nd Level Cache. Und davon profitiert der P4 wesentlich mehr als die AMD64 CPUs, weil die SSE2 Einheit von Intel bekanntlich um einiges schneller ist.

Was das Umschalten zwischen 32Bit-Mode und 64Bit-Modus angeht: Geht das nicht nur beim Booten?
