haven't checked these boards since my last post and was quite surprised by the (very localized) firestorm I created with the word "forced" as in..

..soon all SETI@home users will be forced to upgrade to the new version.

Apparently I was a tad bit glib. It seems some of you were turned off by the word "forced." Fair enough - I should have said "required to upgrade to the new version if you wish to continue participating in our project." I apologize for the misleading sentiment.

By the way, we already have over 65,000 people using the new version without being forced.. I mean.. required to upgrade. Want to get a head start? See:

The way the "grand migration" will work is this:

Server status update: The new database server is still being tested, but is working quite well. We're fairly convinced at this point that the crash last week was due to a bug in gnome (a unix windowing system), which has since been disabled.

Once we switch over, it may be impossible to switch back (as it will be much faster than our current database server). So we're being extra cautious, adding queries one by one and checking their success. We have no set time for the transition, but barring any catastrophe it should be any day now.

We have moved the primary database service over to the the new server. Everything is looking good at this point. The new machine is currently very under utilized which is good - we are going to grow a lot!
The new system consists of a Sun v40z opteron with 2 1.8GHz processors and 8GB RAM, connected to a Sun 3510 fibre channel storage array. The latter was donated by Sun. As the needs of the project increase we can add 2 additional CPUs and take RAM up to 32GB.

The old database server is now a replica that will be used for backups and administrative queries.

Update. Once the RAID rebuilds we are going to run a job to delete old workunits and results from the array. These would normally be deleted by the file deleter but the latter is still backed up from before the database migration. The project will remain off through all of this.

The data server failed around 20:30 UTC for the third time in as many days. The project will be down as we continue to diagnose the problem.

Hi!!

Ob die das jemals gebacken bekommen? Da muss man länger auf ne Wu warten als das rechnen brauch. Seit paar Wochen bekommt man entweder keine wu oder man kann keine fertigen wegschicken. Wenn man schon seine Rechnerzeit und Stromrechnung denen schenkt sollte man wenigstens erwarten das alles einigermaßen funzt. Vielleicht sollte ich ja wieder umsteigen auf rc oder clima oder sowas.

SETI@home: Wieder Ärger mit dem Data-Server

19.02.2005 - Das SETI@home Projekt kämpft weiter mit der Hardware. Zwar ist der Transfer der Datenbank auf den neuen SUN Server erfolgreich verlaufen und dieser arbeitet fehlerfrei, aber nun macht sich wieder der Data-Server bemerkbar. Auf diesem befinden sich etwa 1.000 Gigabyte Up- und Download Daten.

Dieser Server, der eigentlich eine intelligente Festplatte, ein NAS (Network Attached Storage) System ist, hat bereits seit seiner Inbetriebnahme Anfang des Jahres Probleme gemacht. Nachdem er aber nun monatelang zufriedenstellend lief, kommen die aktuellen Ausfälle völlig überraschend.

Das Team in Berkeley und die Herstellerfirma arbeiten an dem Problem. Da es aber beim SETI@home Projekt keine Möglichkeite gibt 1 Terrabyte (1.000 GB) Daten auf einen anderen Plattenbereich zu verlegen, ist bis zur Lösung des Problems mit wiederkehrenden Totalausfällen bei Up- und Downloads zu rechnen.

The Einstein@home project was officially launched this morning. We encourage SETI@home users to also participate in this project, which searches for spinning neutron stars (also called pulsars) using data from the LIGO and GEO gravitational wave detectors.

Habe gerade meinen neuen Dual XP@MP 1800+ BOINC-tauglich gemacht, und bekomme keine Einheiten

Auf keinem Rechner. Wie lange wird das noch dauern? Bin ganz wild, was er wohl leistet *buck*

EDIT Gerade konnte ich wenigstens den Client runterladen.

wohl eher was laenger ich wuerde einfach nen anderes Projekt zur Ueberbrueckung nutzen.

das weis wohl keiner, wenn auch in Berkeley auf Server Seite alles zur Zeit Grün ist, tut sich aber wohl nix...

probier mal zum testen bis Berkely wieder läuft, mann kann auch merere Projecte paralel laufen lassen Einstein@home , so hat man keine Pobs mit no Work...

Wenn ich Attach Project mache, und meine ID eingebe und die Einstein URL http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/ dann kommt "BOINC failed to log in to http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/. Please check your account ID and try again"

Kommt mit BOINC 4.13 und 4.19, mit der Account-ID die ich erhalten habe beim anmelden und mit der "Cross-ID" die in meinen Einstellungen steht.

auf zb 1 GB, oder 0.1 GB...

zum Problem, das kann dann ja nur noch an der URL liegen, oder EAH ist vieleicht gerade etwas überlastet.

The data server NAS box may be OK at this point, although we have not subjected it to the full production load yet. We currently have the data server turned off so that the file deleter can at least partially clear a large backlog of workunit and result files that are scheduled for deletion. This backlog is a hold over problem from when our database server was on a slow machine. Validation and assimilation are both currently on.

no work here, da mein letzter Seti@home Client auch keine WUs bekommt, werde ich ihn wohl oder übel auch auf SAH umstellen müssen.

auch wenn es noch keine News darüber gibt.

btw mein einer Rechner welcher nur SAH rechnet hatte das ganze Wochenende keine Probs, es gab immer mal wieder WUs, zurzeit hat er etwas 22 Wus in Reserve, sieht also alles gut aus, bei einer Einstellung von 3 Tage Cache latürnich.

Habe eben alle WUs geupt und auch neue bekommen.
Der Validator hängt zwar wieder bei knapp 200K aber das ist zweitrangig.

Jepp, WUs hatte ich auch schon im Laufe des Sonntages wieder bekommen und gestern abend waren dann auch auf einmal alle Results weg, hab mich erst schon erschrocken und dachte BOINC haette die getilt. *buck*
