Das Programm unterstützt grundsätzlich die Chat-Protokolle von AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber/XMPP, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, QQ, Lotus Sametime, SILC, SIMPLE, MySpaceIM, und Zephyr - weitere stehen über Plugins zur Verfügung. Aktuell werden 70 Sprachen unterstützt.
Pidgin läuft unter Windows ab Windows 2000, Mac OS X ab 10.4 und Linux.

Ich weiss nicht ob das nur bei mir so ist aber seit ein paar Versionen ist das MSN Protokoll fast unbrauchbar geworden im Pidgin. Kontaktavatare werden nicht mehr angezeigt und der Dateitransfer, welcher bisher immer ein Problem bei Pidgin und dem MSN Protokoll war, geht fast gar nicht mehr. (vorher zumindest mit unglaublichen 5kb/s 
)
Habe deswegen das Pecan Protokoll installiert aber das trentte in den Versionen 2.7.8 und 2.7.9 immer die Verbindung zu MSN.
Mal shen ob sich in der neuen Version etwas getan hat.
