Im Oktober letzten Jahres hatte Cray die Verfügbarkeit des auf Opteron Prozessoren basierenden Supercomputers XD1 <a HREF="http://www.planet3dnow.de/cgi-bin/newspub/viewnews.cgi?category=1&id=1096994327" TARGET="b">bekanntgegeben</A>.
In den letzten beiden Tage konnte Cray nun zwei weitere Installtationen des XD1 vermelden. Das italienische Nationale Supercomputing Center (CINECA) wird ein System mit 144 Prozessoren aufbauen.<UL><I>"CINECA will make the innovative Cray XD1 supercomputer available to researchers at its 25 affiliated Italian universities for advanced work in mathematics, engineering, physics, chemistry, statistics, climate science, biomedicine and human sciences. CINECA will also exploit the Cray XD1 system's field programmable gate array (FPGA) capabilities for acceleration of key applications."</I></UL>Das zweite System wird am Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC), der U.S. Air Force installiert und basiert auf 288 Opteron Prozessoren.<UL><I>"A Cray XD1 system with 288 AMD Opteron(TM) processors and peak performance of about 1.4 trillion calculations per second (teraflops) will soon begin to advance the work of the Maui Space Surveillance Site (MSSS). Located at the summit of Haleakala on the island of Maui, this unique site can gather data on near and deep space objects at night or in daylight."</I></UL>
