FREMONT, Calif., Mar 29, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- SGI (SGI 10.70, +0.01, +0.09%) , a global leader in HPC and data center solutions, today reaffirmed its commitment to supporting AMD(R) Opteron(TM) series platform choices, including the AMD Opteron 6000 series, across all SGI(R) scale-out server platforms. SGI server solutions will tackle mission critical server and workstation application workloads with increased performance and energy efficiency.
Day-one support for the new AMD Opteron 6000 series platforms is offered across SGI's entire design-to-order server portfolio, including CloudRack(TM) and Rackable(TM) scale-out servers and SGI(R) InfiniteStorage servers. The ICE Cube(TM) modular data center also supports AMD Opteron processors for the first time. With up to 12 cores per processor, SGI servers gain dramatic increases in core density--up to 1,824 cores per rack with CloudRack(TM) C2 servers and up to 2,208 cores per rack with Rackable(TM) half-depth servers. ICE Cube modular data centers can now scale to 41,760 cores per container.

Was steckt hinter der Meldung?
Der goldene Glanz vergangener Größe ist bei SGI zwar abgeblättert ... aber bis zu dieser Ankündigung haben sie breitbeinig die K8-Familie von AMD nie genutzt. Und auch die K10-Prozessoren waren bisher nie im Produktkorb. Das ist eine recht bemerkenswerte Ausnahme im High Performance Computing-Umfeld ("HPC").
Dafür gehörte SGI zum Itanium-Kerntruppe ("Itanium Solutions Alliance") und hatte seitdem bis zum Insolvenzverfahren im Mai 2006 ziemlich einstecken müssen.
Erst die Hinwendung zu ganz "normalen" Xeon-Feld und Wiesen-Prozessoren und Plattform im Sommer 2007 brachte SGI auf einen stabilen Kurs.
Wo steht der klassengleiche HPC-Konkurrent Cray?
Der strukturgleiche HPC-Konkurrent Cray hingegen verzichtete auf das Itanium-Abenteuer und gehörte zu den Kernmitglied der K8-Plattform und hat auch tapfer das Barcelona-Tief (der erste K10) überstanden.
Aber mit dem Barcelona-Tief ging der HPC-Pionier fremd und führte erste kompakte Supercomputer mit Intel-Chips ein. Zwar noch nicht für die ganz großen Eisen, aber immerhin und AMD war gewarnt.
SGI seit einem Jahr mit neuem Kurs
In so fern ist es überraschend, dass nun auch SGI ganz offiziell den Opteron der neuen 6000-Familie nutzt. Der G34-Sockel nun auch bei den SGI-Eisen in der modernsten Form mit dem MagnyCours-Opteron auf der Maranello-Plattform und bereitet so den Boden für den Bulldozer ... und da wird eine derartige Ankündigung ganz besonders spannend.
Da hat wohl der SGI-Aufkäufer RACKABLE SYSTEMS (Aufkauf zum 1. April 2009) gehörig den Traditionsladen und 3D-Pionier durchgepustet (Rackable nutzte schon länger die AMD-Plattform (PDF)).

Insofern ist es nicht mehr überraschend. SGI ist nicht mehr SGI sondern eigentlich Rackable.
