SUNNYVALE, CA—June 1, 2009—Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX17480, a fixed-frequency, step-down regulator designed specifically for the AMD® serial VID interface (SVI) CPU. This device features two high-current SMPSs for the CPU cores and one 4A internal switch SMPS for the Northbridge (NB) core. To enhance design flexibility, it provides an adjustable switching-frequency range of 100kHz to 600kHz for the CPU cores and 200kHz to 1.2MHz for the NB core. Additionally, it features SMPS feedback-adjustment amplifiers to allow for programmable AC and DC droop. All three SMPSs can be independently programmed to any voltage using AMD's SVI.
The two CPU core SMPSs operate 180° out-of-phase for true interleaving, and can be configured as independent outputs or as a combined output. The NB core SMPS runs at twice the switching frequency of the CPU core SMPSs, thus allowing the use of smaller external components. The MAX17480 also offers enhanced transient detection and transient phase-repeat capabilities for lower CPU output capacitance. Output overvoltage protection (OVP), undervoltage protection (UVP), undervoltage-lockout (UVLO) protection, and thermal protection are included as well.
The MAX17480 is available in a space-saving, 5mm x 5mm, 40-pin TQFN package with an exposed pad. It is fully specified over the -40°C to +105°C extended-industrial temperature range. Prices start at $5.66 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit with recommended external components is available to reduce design time.
