Der einstmalige Lizenzpartner von Qimonda geht seit fast 2 Jahren fremd. Die Technologiepartnerschaft mit Micron trägt Früchte für den Speicherhersteller Nanya.

Erste RAM-Chips für DDR3-Speicher in 42nm-Technik wurden nun gezeigt und auch der Schritt auf kleinere Strukturen wird in den Entwicklerlabors der Speicherchip-Nr. 3 und den Taiwanern vorbereitet.

Basis des 42nm-Prozesses ist die Kupfermetallisierung und ersetzt die bis dahin üblichen Aluminium Leiterbahnen in den Speicherchips.
- Der DDR3-RAM wurde als 2GBit-Chip entworfen. Die projektierten 2 GByte Speichermodule werden mit 8 dieser Bauteilgruppen bestückt.
- Bis zu 16 GByte pro Speicher-PCB sind damit möglich.
- Die Datenrate liegt derzeit bei 1866 Megabits pro Sekunde.

Die Standardspannung ist bei diesen neuen DDR3-Produkt für 1,35 V Spannung ausgelegt und liegt somit im 2010 JEDEC-Fahrplan.
Für 2010 sah die Speicherindsustrie-Roadmap vor, dass Standard DDR3-Speicher aus den Vorjahren mit einer Spannung von 1,5V langfristig ab diesem Jahr ersetzt wird von Low-Power DDR3-RAM.
Die Pressemeldung spricht in diesem Falle von einem Energieeinsparungspotenzial von etwas 30 Prozent gegenüber dem bisherigen Standard-DDR3-RAM.

Geplant ist die Risiko-Fertigung ("Sampling") der ersten Low-Power DDR3-Speicher in 42nm-Technik für das zweite Quartal 2010.
Ab dem zweiten Halbjahr 2010 soll die Massenfertigung beginnen.

Companies Continue DRAM Advancement with 3X-nanometer Process Technology Working in the Lab

BOISE, Idaho, and TAOYUAN, Taiwan, February 9, 2010 – Micron Technology, Inc. and Nanya Technology Corporation today announced that they have jointly developed a 2-gigabit (Gb) DDR3 memory device using their new copper-based 42-nanometer (nm) DRAM process technology. DDR3 is the predominant memory technology used in high-performance computing applications including servers, notebooks and desktop computers.

The move to smaller process geometries is fundamentally important for maintaining manufacturing cost efficiencies while also providing benefits for customers including lower power, higher performance, greater density, and smaller die sizes. The new 42nm process now makes 1.35-volts the standard, mainstream voltage requirement, compared to 1.5-volt with previous generations.
Reducing memory power consumption is critical to today’s server environments, where power and cooling infrastructure costs can be comparable to the costs for the server equipment. With increasing memory requirements in servers, it has been estimated that memory power consumption can be up to 21-watts per module.* The 1.35 voltage can provide a savings of up to 30-percent in these applications, reducing both power and cooling requirements.

Faster memory speed grades are important for achieving maximum system performance. By shrinking process technology, the new 2Gb 42nm DDR3 device delivers improved memory performance capable of reaching up to 1866 megabits per second. In addition, the small die size coupled with the 2Gb density of the 42nm DDR3 device enables modules up to 16GBs.

Nanya plans to serve the server and PC market, as well as the consumer market, with this latest technology device.

The new 42nm DRAM process technology uses the more efficient and reliable copper metallization technology, allowing Micron and Nanya to stay on the leading-edge of process scaling.
Micron has long recognized the benefits of copper in aiding DRAM scale, and has continued to leverage and refine the technology for nearly a decade. When compared to other metallization techniques, such as aluminum, copper is recognized as the more extendible, reliable and cost-effective approach for advancing process geometries and enhancing product performance.

Availability (Lieferbarkeit)

Sampling is scheduled to start in the second calendar quarter of 2010, with production ramp planned for the second half of year.

Jetzt verstehe ich,wieso irgendwo auf einer Roadmap DDR3-1866 bei Bulldozer mit dabei stand :)
Das wird also der nächste Jedec Mainstream Standard.

Aber welche Spannung gilt da jetzt ? Auch noch 1,35V, oder schon 1,5V ? Ist mir irgendwie nicht ganz klar. 1,35V wäre fast zu schön um wahr zu sein. Wobei es mit den Gskill ECOs ja schon 1600er mit 1,35V gibt, und das sind sicherlich noch normale Aluminium Chips.

Auf alle Fälle sehr gut, da werden Llano und Orochi dann nicht so arg durch die RAM Geschwindigkeit behindert :)
