Der neue Server ersetzt zwei derzeit verwendete Intel Pentium III Dual-CPU Maschinen, die bisher aufgeteilt waren in Server 1 HTTP/CGI und Server 2 MySQL-Datenbank. Aufgrund der permanenten Überlastung und der Tatsache, dass Deutschlands größtes Online-Magazin für AMD-User auf einen AMD-Server gehört, starten wir nun das Projekt "Neuer Server", das wir zusammen mit der Community von Anfang bis Ende durchführen werden.

Begründung:
Wir benötigen ein 19" 2 HE Gehäuse, um die Housing-Vorgaben zu erfüllen.
Die Wahl fiel auf ein Mainboard mit 2 CPU-Sockeln und zwei Single-Core CPUs, da die verwendeten Opteron 246 ein derzeit kaum schlagbares Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis haben, zusammen fast 300 EUR billiger sind, als ein einzelner Dual-Core Opteron 270. Sollten die 2 Opteron 246 irgendwann nicht mehr genügen, kann man ohne großen Aufwand zwei Dual-Core Opterons stattdessen einbauen, ohne dafür ein neues Mainboard und damit ein neues System installieren zu müssen.
Die 4 GB Corsair Reg ECC CL2 RAMs deshalb, da Planet 3DNow! künftig vorwiegend Datenbank-Last erzeugen wird und für diese Zwecke Low-Latency eine Menge bringt. 4 GB sollten erst einmal genügen, falls nicht, bietet das Board die Möglichkeit, weitere 4 GB RAM nachzurüsten.
Der 3ware SATA2 Raid-Controller wurde deshalb ausgewählt, da es sich dabei um einen der wenigen echten SATA2-Raid Controller handelt, die nicht einen billigen Chip a la Silicon Image oder Promise aufgelötet haben, wie sie auch bei Onboard-Lösungen zum Einsatz kommen, sondern um einen echten Controller-Prozessor mit eigenem RAM (DDR2). Warum SATA2? Deutlich billiger, als eine vergleichbare SCSI-Lösung. Die gewählten Samsung SATA2-Platten bieten ein gutes Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis und die aus dem Raid 5 resultierende nutzbare Größe von 240 GB genügt für unsere Zwecke locker.
