SystemRescueCd, eine auf Gentoo basierende Linux Boot-CD, ist in der Version 1.0.2 erschienen. Mit der CD können zahlreiche Aufgaben rund um das Bearbeiten und Erstellen von Partitionen vorgenommen werden. Dabei werden zahlreiche Dateisysteme unterstützt.

Wer in den letzten Tagen auf der Futuremark-Webseite unterwegs war, wird sicher den Countdown zum Start des 3DMark Vantage gesehen haben, heute war es dann so weit.
Die gegenüber dem Vorgänger (579MB) sogar leicht auf 449MB geschrumpfte Installationsdatei kann seit 15 Uhr, wenn man ein wenig Geduld mitbringt, heruntergelden werden. Einen Haken, der bereits beim PCMark Vantage vorhanden war, hat jedoch der jüngste Spross der erfolgreichen 3D-Benchmarkreihe, er kann in der Trial-Version lediglich ein einziges Mal ausgeführt werden. Für die Möglichkeit weiterer Durchläufe ist die $6,95 (plus Mehrwertsteuer) teure Basic-Version vonnöten. Mit $19,95 bzw. $29,95 (ebenfalls plus Mehrwertsteuer) liegt die Advanced-Version gleichauf mit der des 3DMark06 in der Download- bzw. CD-Rom-Option.
Wer kennt das Problem das Problem veralteter Grafiktreiber für Notebooks nicht, der originale Treiber des Chip-Herstellers lässt sich nicht installieren und der Gerätehersteller lässt sich ein wenig mehr Zeit diesen freizugeben.
Die Reglementierung, die von Seiten der Hersteller ausgeht und von AMD bzw. ATI in die Originaltreiber eingebaut worden ist, macht es dem Support bei Fehlern leichter, diese einzugrenzen, da nur eine begrenzte Treiberbasis zur Verfügung steht. Für den Kunden ist dies mitunter jedoch sehr ärgerlich, da gerade bei neuen Spielen der Catalyst-Treiber sehr schnell auf diese angepasst wird, die eventuell schon mehrere Monate alte Version des Geräteherstellers jedoch erhebliche Leistungseinbußen mit sich bringen kann.
Genau an diesem Punkt setzt der DH Mobility Modder an und bietet die Möglichkeit einen beliebigen Catalyst-Treiber Mobility Radeon-kompatibel zu machen. Dazu wird lediglich ein Catalyst Treiber, z.B. der derzeit aktuelle Catalyst 8.4, MSXML 6.0 und das nicht einmal 2MB große Programm benötigt. Eine detaillierte Beschreibung wie genau die Modifikation am Treiber durchzuführen ist, kann bei DriverHeaven gefunden werden.
Nach langer Entwicklungszeit hat Christian Kindahl soeben die Version 0.45 seines quelloffenen Brennprogramms InfraRecorder veröffentlicht. Neben zahlreichen Bugfixes und Detailverbesserungen gibt es auch einige größere Änderungen. So lassen sich nun reine UDF-Medien erstellen und Dateien größer als 4 GB lassen sich auf ISO9660-Medien brennen. Für Dateinamen wird in der neuen Version bei den Formaten Joliet und UDF der komplette Unicode-Zeichenraum unterstützt.
InfraRecorder bietet ähnlich wie Nero auch eine funktionsreduzierte Express-Version und ist in zahlreichen Sprachen erhältlich, darunter auch Deutsch. Dennoch ist es mit nur 3-4 MB sehr klein. Damit InfraRecorder MP3-Dateien verarbeiten kann, ist ein Plugin nötig, welches aus patentrechtlichen Gründen separat heruntergeladen werden muss. Neben der 32-Bit-Version gibt es von InfraRecorder auch eine für 64-Bit-Systeme und eine Portable-Edition für den Einsatz auf USB-Sticks.

Das Freeware-Tool SpeedFan ist in einer neuen Version 4.34 erschienen. SpeedFan ermöglicht die Überwachung diverser System-Parameter wie Lüfterdrehzahlen, Temperaturen, Spannungen oder auch das Auslesen von S.M.A.R.T. Informationen. Im Oktober 2006 veröffentlichte die Mozilla Foundation mit Firefox 2.0 ein neues Major-Release des Open Source Webbrowsers (wir berichteten). Nun steht mit der Version 2.0.0.14 ein Update zum Download bereit.

ATI hat sein CATALYST Grafikkarten- und Chipsatz-Treiberpaket in der Version 8.4 zum Download freigegeben. Voraussetzung für das CATALYST Control Center (CCC*) ist unter Windows XP ein installiertes Microsoft .NET Framework. Eine aktuelle Version des .NET Framework kann man über die Microsoft Windows Update Seite beziehen.
In der aktuellen Treiberversion findet man keine neuen Funktionen und es werden keine besonderen Performanceverbesserungen hervorgehoben. Dafür wurden zahlreiche Fehler beseitigt.

Der VideoLAN VLC media player - ein universeller Multiformat-Mediaplayer, der nicht nur Filme bereits anspielen kann, während sie noch heruntergeladen werden (und deshalb bei Filesharing-Freunden sehr beliebt ist), sondern auch die Möglichkeit bietet, selbst Filme ins Netz zu streamen - ist in der neuen Version 0.8.6f erschienen.
Der VLC media player unterstützt bereits von Haus aus unzählige Audio- und Video-Codecs und wird für eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Betriebssysteme bereitgestellt. We are pleased to announce the release of VLC media player 0.8.6f. This is a bugfix release. VLC media player 0.8.6e and earlier versions suffer from security vulnerabilities in the Subtitle demuxer, Real RTSP demuxer, MP4 demuxer and Cinepak codec. This release also includes improved video output on multi-screen setups running Mac OS X and compatibility with Windows 9x/ME has been restored. We strongly recommend all users to update to this new version.
Windows 95/98/Me users: Please note that these versions of Windows are not officially supported. No VideoLAN developer uses any of these systems, which makes them hard to support. VLC should mostly work with them, but some incompatibilities might appear. You might need to download The Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems.

Is Windows Vista supported?
Yes, but there are currently a few known issues that the development team are working on. DirectSound hardware acceleration no longer exists on Vista (resulting in broken support for 5.1/7.1 speakers); Skinned scrollbars may not be displayed correctly; Video playback may be a bit flaky (most likely related to old/buggy video drivers or directshow codecs) or doesn't work at all with Aero enabled; and DWM/Flip3D displays the built-in Classic skin for all Modern skins. We hope to resolve most if not all of these issues in forthcoming Winamp releases.

SystemRescueCd, eine auf Gentoo basierende Linux Boot-CD, ist in der Version 1.0.1 erschienen. Mit der CD können zahlreiche Aufgaben rund um das Bearbeiten und Erstellen von Partitionen vorgenommen werden. Dabei werden zahlreiche Dateisysteme unterstützt.
