Nun hat Microsoft den Support für Windows 98 (SE) / Me bereits am 11. Juli 2006 und damit jegliche Sicherheits-Updates eingestellt. Doch das hindert einige fähige Entwickler nicht daran inoffizielle Updates bereitzustellen. Besonders aktiv sind hier Mitglieder des Microsoft Software Forum Networks (MSFN), Unterforum Windows 9x Member Projects, wo zahlreiche Optimierungen und Fixes bereitgestellt werden.

Da Internet Explorer bzw Outlook Express 6 SP1 unter Windows 2000/XP weiterhin mit Updates versorgt werden, ist es möglich die erneuerten Dateien zu extrahieren und unter Windows 98 (SE) zu installieren. In diesem Fall sind also offizielle Updates und inoffizielle Anpassungen enthalten. Das deutsche Update Paket ist nun in der aktualisierten Version 3.2 auf www.nandlstadt.com verfügbar. Weiterhin werden auf der Seite ein inoffizielles Service Pack für Windows 98 (SE) und ein universeller USB 2.0 Treiber (NUSB) für Windows 98 SE, mit dem nahezu alle MP3-Player und USB-Sticks erkannt werden, zur Verfügung gestellt.

Die Installation ist bezüglich der Sicherheitslage unter Win98(SE) zu empfehlen, auch wenn Firefox und Thunderbird verwendet werden, sind doch einige Komponenten des IE gleichzeitig Komponenten des ganzen Systems.

Hinweis: Es handelt sich hierbei um kein offizielles Update-Paket von Microsoft.

Mozilla hat seinen freien Browser Firefox in der Version 3.6.3 veröffentlicht. In der neuen Version wurde eine kritische Sicherheitslücke geschlossen.

Besonders hervorgehoben wurde dabei eine Lücke, die von Evgeny Legerov entdeckt wurde. Durch sie lässt sich mit dem in Firefox 3.6 neu eingeführten WOFF-Format für Schriften ein Buffer-Overflow erzeugen, der einem Angreifer ermöglichen kann schadehaften Code auf einem System auszuführen.

AVG hat Anfang Oktober Version 9.0 seiner Anti-Virus Free Edition veröffentlicht. Wie der Name schon sagt ist das Programm kostenlos verfügbar und ohne Einschränkungen nutzbar. Die neue Version ist nun vollständig WIndows 7 kompatibel und soll beim Scannen nur noch ein Zehntel der Zeit benötigen. Desweiteren soll der Installationsprozess deutlich vereinfacht und das Design modernisiert worden sein, mehr dazu im Changelog. Die aktuelle Version 9.0.698 ist seit dem 21. Oktober verfügbar.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 läuft unter Windows ab Windows 2000, jedoch nicht auf den Server-Versionen.

Version 10.1 des Flash Players verspricht Videobeschleunigung mit Hilfe unterstützter GPUs von ATI (Radeon HD ab 3000er Serie, FirePro ab V3750) und von NVIDIA (Liste unterstützter GPUs).

Der Flash Player 10 läuft unter Windows ab Windows 2000, Mac OS X ab 10.4, Linux und Solaris 10.

Desweiteren wurde der ältere Flash Player 9 auf die Version 9.0.262.0 aktualisiert, dieser unterstützt noch die älteren Betriebssystem-Versionen Windows 98(SE) und Me, Mac OS X 10.1 bis 10.3 und ältere Linux-Varianten. Für diesen gibt es bisher keine Release Notes, wahrscheinlich ist aber, dass zumindest die gleiche Sicherheitslücke beseitigt wurde.
