Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6.0

Spybot-S&D 1.6 has arrived!
Time for an update! To keep up with the latest threats, and solve some issues and feature requests users had, we're proud to announce Spybot-S&D version 1.6. Some of the features include:

Improved Scan Speed
Reported a few weeks ago as one of the big issues users face, Spybot-S&D 1.6 integrates parts of the future 2.0 file scanning engine to speed up the on-demand scan.

Up-to-date browser support
Both immunization and the on-demand scan are able to access a dozen different browsers, which now includes the latest revisions of the most popular ones, Firefox and Opera.

Easier On-Access Use
Until now, our on-access part was able to block bad entries, but at the same time, confused many novice users by asking for confirmation on changes of other monitored system entries as well. While this is a great feature for all experienced users who want full control over their systems, we decided that we need to make this easier for the average user, and integrated automated decisions based on the system entry database built through our RunAlyzer, containing more than quarter of a million decisions.

OpenSBI
Safer Networking also announces OpenSBI, our attempt at opening up the fight against malware to anyone who wants to participate. OpenSBI means we've published documenation and tools that anyone can use to create their own malware detection patterns for use with Spybot-S&D, and share those with other Spybot-S&D users.

  • Diversity - everyone can create detection templates for any software, without depending on a central authority to acknowledge its threat.
  • Neutrality - we cannot be bought to remove detections from our database, but if you do not believe us, you can simply publish your own rules against some malware.
  • Continuity - OpenSBI ensures that you'll get updates as long as someone is interested in updating the database (which does not mean we intend to do less work in adding new detections).
  • Flexibility - as a system administrator using the network edition, you can make sure that working time is not wasted by employees playing the latest Moorhuhn clone if you add your own detection for it. Keep in mind that some relaxation is said to even improve work results.
And quite a lot more bug fixes and new features, which can be found on bug tracker.

TrueCrypt 6.0

New features:
  • Parallelized encryption/decryption on multi-core processors (or multi-processor systems). Increase in encryption/decryption speed is directly proportional to the number of cores and/or processors.

For example, if your computer has a quad-core processor, encryption and decryption will be four times faster than on a single-core processor with equivalent specifications (likewise, it will be twice faster on dual-core processors, etc.)

    [View benchmark results]

  • Ability to create and run an encrypted Hidden Operating System whose existence is impossible to prove (provided that certain guidelines are followed). For more information, see the section Hidden Operating System. (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)

For security reasons, when a Hidden Operating System is running, TrueCrypt ensures that all local unencrypted filesystems and non-hidden TrueCrypt volumes are read-only. (Data is allowed to be written to filesystems within hidden TrueCrypt volumes.)

Note: We recommend that hidden volumes are mounted only when a hidden operating system is running. For more information, see the subsection Security Precautions Pertaining to Hidden Volumes.

  • On Windows Vista and Windows 2008, it is now possible to encrypt an entire system drive even if it contains extended/logical partitions. (Note that this is not supported on Windows XP.)

  • New volume format that increases reliability, performance and expandability:
    • Each volume created by this or later versions of TrueCrypt will contain an embedded backup header (located at the end of the volume). Note that it is impossible to mount a volume when its header is damaged (the header contains an encrypted master key). Therefore, embedded backup headers significantly reduce this risk. For more information, see the subsection Tools > Restore Volume Header.

Note: If the user fails to supply the correct password (and/or keyfiles) twice in a row when trying to mount a volume, TrueCrypt will automatically try to mount the volume using the embedded backup header (in addition to trying to mount it using the primary header) each subsequent time that the user attempts to mount the volume (until he or she clicks Cancel). If TrueCrypt fails to decrypt the primary header and then decrypts the embedded backup header successfully (with the same password and/or keyfiles), the volume is mounted and the user is warned that the volume header is damaged (and informed as to how to repair it).

    • The size of the volume header area has been increased to 128 KB. This will allow implementation of new features and improvements in future versions and ensures that performance will not be impaired when a TrueCrypt volume is stored on a file system or device that uses a sector size greater than 512 bytes (the start of the data area will always be aligned with the start of a host-filesystem/physical sector).

For more information about the new volume format, see the section TrueCrypt Volume Format Specification.

Note: Volumes created by previous versions of TrueCrypt can be mounted using this version of TrueCrypt.

  • Parallelized header key derivation on multi-core processors (one algorithm per core/thread). As a result, mounting is several times faster on multi-core processors. (Windows)

  • Ability to create hidden volumes under Mac OS X and Linux.

  • On Linux, TrueCrypt now uses native kernel cryptographic services (by default) for volumes encrypted in XTS mode. This increases read/write speed in most cases. However, the FUSE driver must still be used when the volume is encrypted in a deprecated mode of operation (LRW or CBC), or when mounting an outer volume with hidden-volume protection, or when using an old version of the Linux kernel that does not support XTS mode. (Linux)

Improvements:
  • Up to 20% faster resuming from hibernation when the system partition/drive is encrypted. (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)

  • Many other improvements. (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux)

Removed features:
  • Encrypted system partitions/drives can no longer be permanently decrypted using the TrueCrypt Boot Loader (however, it is still possible using the TrueCrypt Rescue Disk). (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)

Note: This was done in order to reduce the memory requirements for the TrueCrypt Boot Loader, which was necessary to enable the implementation of support for hidden operating systems.

Bug fixes:
  • When Windows XP was installed on a FAT16 or FAT32 partition (as opposed to an NTFS partition) and the user attempted to encrypt the system partition (or system drive), the system encryption pretest failed. This will no longer occur.

  • Many other minor bug fixes and security improvements (preventing e.g. denial-of-service attacks). (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux)

Firefox 3 is based on the Gecko 1.9 Web rendering platform, which has been under development for the past 34 months. Building on the previous release, Gecko 1.9 has more than 14,000 updates including some major re-architecting to provide improved performance, stability, rendering correctness, and code simplification and sustainability. Firefox 3 has been built on top of this new platform resulting in a more secure, easier to use, more personal product with a lot more under the hood to offer website and Firefox add-on developers.

    More Secure

    * One-click site info: Click the site favicon in the location bar to see who owns the site and to check if your connection is protected from eavesdropping. Identity verification is prominently displayed and easier to understand. When a site uses Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificates, the site favicon button will turn green and show the name of the company you're connected to. (Try it here!)
    * Malware Protection: malware protection warns users when they arrive at sites which are known to install viruses, spyware, trojans or other malware. (Try it here!)
    * New Web Forgery Protection page: the content of pages suspected as web forgeries is no longer shown. (Try it here!)
    * New SSL error pages: clearer and stricter error pages are used when Firefox encounters an invalid SSL certificate. (Try it here!)
    * Add-ons and Plugin version check: Firefox now automatically checks add-on and plugin versions and will disable older, insecure versions.
    * Secure add-on updates: to improve add-on update security, add-ons that provide updates in an insecure manner will be disabled.
    * Anti-virus integration: Firefox will inform anti-virus software when downloading executables.
    * Vista Parental Controls: Firefox now respects the Vista system-wide parental control setting for disabling file downloads.
    * Effective top-level domain (eTLD) service better restricts cookies and other restricted content to a single domain.
    * Better protection against cross-site JSON data leaks.

    Easier to Use

    * Easier password management: an information bar replaces the old password dialog so you can now save passwords after a successful login.
    * Simplified add-on installation: the add-ons whitelist has been removed making it possible to install extensions from third-party sites in fewer clicks.
    * New Download Manager: the revised download manager makes it much easier to locate downloaded files, and you can see and search on the name of the website where a file came from. Your active downloads and time remaining are always shown in the status bar as your files download.
    * Resumable downloading: users can now resume downloads after restarting the browser or resetting your network connection.
    * Full page zoom: from the View menu and via keyboard shortcuts, the new zooming feature lets you zoom in and out of entire pages, scaling the layout, text and images, or optionally only the text size. Your settings will be remembered whenever you return to the site.
    * Podcasts and Videocasts can be associated with your media playback tools.
    * Tab scrolling and quickmenu: tabs are easier to locate with the new tab scrolling and tab quickmenu.
    * Save what you were doing: Firefox will prompt users to save tabs on exit.
    * Optimized Open in Tabs behavior: opening a folder of bookmarks in tabs now appends the new tabs rather than overwriting.
    * Location and Search bar size can now be customized with a simple resizer item.
    * Text selection improvements: multiple text selections can be made with Ctrl/Cmd; double-click drag selects in "word-by-word" mode; triple-clicking selects a paragraph.
    * Find toolbar: the Find toolbar now opens with the current selection.
    * Plugin management: users can disable individual plugins in the Add-on Manager.
    * Integration with Windows: Firefox now has improved Windows icons, and uses native user interface widgets in the browser and in web forms.
    * Integration with the Mac: the new Firefox theme makes toolbars, icons, and other user interface elements look like a native OS X application. Firefox also uses OS X widgets and supports Growl for notifications of completed downloads and available updates. A combined back and forward control make it even easier to move between web pages.
    * Integration with Linux: Firefox's default icons, buttons, and menu styles now use the native GTK theme.

    More Personal

    * Star button: quickly add bookmarks from the location bar with a single click; a second click lets you file and tag them.
    * Tags: associate keywords with your bookmarks to sort them by topic.
    * Location bar & auto-complete: type in all or part of the title, tag or address of a page to see a list of matches from your history and bookmarks; a new display makes it easier to scan through the matching results and find that page you're looking for. Results are returned according to their frecency (a combination of frequency and recency of visits to that page) ensuring that you're seeing the most relevant matches. An adaptive learning algorithm further tunes the results to your patterns!
    * Smart Bookmarks Folder: quickly access your recently bookmarked and tagged pages, as well as your more frequently visited pages with the new smart bookmarks folder on your bookmark toolbar.
    * Places Organizer: view, organize and search through all of your bookmarks, tags, and browsing history with multiple views and smart folders to store your frequent searches. Create and restore full backups whenever you want.
    * Web-based protocol handlers: web applications, such as your favorite webmail provider, can now be used instead of desktop applications for handling mailto: links from other sites. Similar support is available for other protocols (Web applications will have to first enable this by registering as handlers with Firefox).
    * Download & Install Add-ons: the Add-ons Manager (Tools > Add-ons) can now be used to download and install a Firefox customization from the thousands of Add-ons available from our community add-ons website. When you first open the Add-ons Manager, a list of recommended Add-ons is shown.
    * Easy to use Download Actions: a new Applications preferences pane provides a better UI for configuring handlers for various file types and protocol schemes.

    Improved Platform for Developers

    * New graphics and font handling: new graphics and text rendering architectures in Gecko 1.9 provides rendering improvements in CSS, SVG as well as improved display of fonts with ligatures and complex scripts.
    * Color management: (set gfx.color_management.enabled on in about:config and restart the browser to enable.) Firefox can now adjust images with embedded color profiles.
    * Offline support: enables web applications to provide offline functionality (website authors must add support for offline browsing to their site for this feature to be available to users).
    * A more complete overview of Firefox 3 for developers is available for website and add-on developers.

    Improved Performance

    * Speed: improvements to our JavaScript engine as well as profile guided optimizations have resulted in continued improvements in performance. Compared to Firefox 2, web applications like Google Mail and Zoho Office run twice as fast in Firefox 3, and the popular SunSpider test from Apple shows improvements over previous releases.
    * Memory usage: Several new technologies work together to reduce the amount of memory used by Firefox 3 over a web browsing session. Memory cycles are broken and collected by an automated cycle collector, a new memory allocator reduces fragmentation, hundreds of leaks have been fixed, and caching strategies have been tuned.
    * Reliability: A user's bookmarks, history, cookies, and preferences are now stored in a transactionally secure database format which will prevent data loss even if their system crashes.

  • AIM
  • Bonjour
  • Gadu-Gadu
  • Google Talk
  • Groupwise
  • ICQ
  • IRC
  • MSN
  • MySpaceIM
  • QQ
  • SILC
  • SIMPLE
  • Sametime
  • XMPP
  • Yahoo!
  • Zephyr

Version 2.4.2 (05/17/2008)
  • libpurple
    • In MySpaceIM, messages from spambots are discarded (Justin Williams)
    • Strip mIRC formatting codes from quit and part messages.
    • IRC now displays ban lists in-channel for joined channels.
    • Fixed a bug where the list of loaded plugins would get removed when switching between different operating systems.
    • Fix reception of IRC PART without a part message on Undernet (fixes a problem with litter in the channel user list).
    • IRC no longer crashes on /list on servers which erroneously omit RPL_LISTSTART.
    • Update the NetworkManager support to use D-Bus directly, instead of libnm-glib. Hopefully it's stable now. It will now compile by default if you have D-Bus support and NetworkManager.h. (Elliott Sales de Andrade)
    • MSN buddy list synchronization is now more forgiving, only asking about buddies who have disappeared completely from the server list and not those that have simply moved groups.
    • IRC will now try to append 1-9 to your nick if it is in use, instead of substituting the last character with 1-9 where possible.
    • Bonjour buddies will be saved persistently if they're moved out of the "Bonjour" group. (Eion Robb)
  • Pidgin
    • The typing notification in the conversation history can be disabled or customized (font, color etc.) in .gtkrc-2.0.
    • Added a plugin (not installed by default) which adds a Send button back to the conversation window. People without physical keyboards have a hard time with the lack of the button.
    • Clicking on the buddyicon in the conversation window toggles the size of the icon between small and large.
    • The settings of a chat (e.g. Handle in an XMPP chat, or Exchange in an AIM chat) can be edited from its context menu in the buddy list.
    • Add a "Present conversation window" preference to the Message Notification plugin; the "Raise conversation window" option does not unminimize windows or draw attention to them when they are on other workspaces--the "Present" option should.
    • Add a preference to set Escape as the keyboard shortcut for closing the conversation window.
    • Add an option in the context menu to disable smileys in the selected text in the conversation history/log viewer. This should help people who regularly paste code in conversations.
    • Add a preference to choose the minimum size of the text input area in lines.
    • Moved the "Local alias" field in the Modify Account dialog to be below the "User Options" heading on the "Basic" tab.
    • Number of room occupants is now shown in chat tooltips where possible
  • General
    • The configure script now dies on more absent dependencies. The --disable-xxx arguments to configure can be used to bypass unneeded dependencies. This will also cause the configure script to die if an --enable-xxx option is used and the dependencies it requires are missing.
    • The Evolution integration plugin must now be explicitly enabled. Use the --enable-gevolution argument to configure to enable it.
    • The Contact Availability Prediction plugin must now be explicitly enabled. Use the --enable-cap argument to configure to enable it.
  • Finch
    • New default binding ctrl+x to open context menus.
    • Menu triggers and other bindings will no longer conflict.
    • Middle click pastes the internal clipboard (when mouse support is enabled).

InfraRecorder 0.45

  • Updated cdrtools to version 2.01.01a38.
  • Fixed a bug making InfraRecorder crash when trying to move a folder to itself.
  • Fixed a bug causing the wrong folder to be opened when double-clicking in the project list view when a project contained folders with identical names.
  • Fixed a bug causing the focus not to be returned to the OK button in the progress dialog after performing an operation.
  • Fixed icon rendering error on Windows XP and newer where display depth is lower than 32-bits.
  • Changed the option to verify the device configuration at start up to be enabled by default.
  • Added support for associating InfraRecorder with disc images.
  • Updated the some of the dialog windows to be minimizable and visible on the task bar when launced by an external application (like irExpress).
  • Fixed a bug causing incorrect file names to be used when verifying recorded discs.
  • Added functionallity to rename and remove files from imported sessions.
  • Added support for selecting which multi-session track to import.
  • When trying to record to a non-empty rewritable disc, InfraRecorder now asks if the disc should be erased.
  • When performing an operation the progress is now also displayed in the taskbar.
  • Reduced memory usage when dealing with projects.
  • Fixed a bug making it impossible to open saved projects containing no files.
  • Included a Thai translation, thanks to Prasit Kaephukhieo!
  • Improved compatibility with the ISO9660 standard.
  • Added support for creating UDF-only file systems.
  • Added support for Unicode files names in Joliet extension and UDF file system.
  • Added support for fragmented files in ISO9660 level 3. Files larger than 4 GiB can now be recorded to an ISO9660 file system.
  • Removed mkisofs and isoinfo dependencies.
  • Fixed some bugs related to importing disc sessions.
  • Added properties menu item when right-clicking on the project tree root node.
  • Added proper flagging of hidden files in the disc file system.
  • Changed the default write method for multi-session projects to TAO.
  • Fixed a bug causing InfraRecorder to crash when renaming project files to include slash or backslash characters.
  • Added the .img extension to the list of supported disc image extensions.
  • A few cosmetic changes.
  • Included an Arabic translation, thanks to Circoficus!
  • Included a Greek translation, thanks to Σταμάτιος Η.
