New features:
* Support for hibernation on computers where the system partition is encrypted (previous versions of TrueCrypt prevented the system from hibernating when the system partition was encrypted). (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)
* Ability to mount a partition that is within the key scope of system encryption without pre-boot authentication (for example, a partition located on the encrypted system drive of another operating system that is not running). (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)

Note: This can be useful e.g. when there is a need to back up or repair an operating system encrypted by TrueCrypt (from within another operating system).
* Command line options for creating new volumes. (Linux and Mac OS X)

Improvements:
* Increased speed of AES encryption/decryption (depending on the hardware platform, by 30-90%). (Windows)
* Faster booting when the system partition is encrypted. (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)
* When the system partition/drive is encrypted, the TrueCrypt Boot Loader is now stored in a compressed form and is, therefore, smaller. If a non-cascade encryption algorithm is used (i.e., AES, Serpent, or Twofish), the TrueCrypt Boot Loader is now small enough so that a backup of the TrueCrypt Boot Loader can be (and is) stored in the first drive cylinder. Whenever the TrueCrypt Boot Loader is damaged, its backup copy is run automatically instead.

As a result of this improvement, the following problem will no longer occur: Certain inappropriately designed activation software (used for activation of some third-party software) writes data to the first drive cylinder, thus damaging the TrueCrypt Boot Loader. The affected users had to use the TrueCrypt Rescue Disk to repair the TrueCrypt Boot Loader. This will no longer be necessary after upgrading to this version of TrueCrypt (provided that the system partition/drive is encrypted using a non-cascade encryption algorithm, i.e., AES, Serpent, or Twofish).

Note: If your system partition/drive is currently encrypted using a non-cascade encryption algorithm (i.e., AES, Serpent, or Twofish), a backup copy of the TrueCrypt Boot Loader will be automatically stored in the first drive cylinder when you upgrade to this version of TrueCrypt.
* The minimum memory requirements for the TrueCrypt Boot Loader have been reduced from 42 KB to 27 KB (twenty-seven kilobytes). This allows users to encrypt system partitions/drives on computers where the BIOS reserves a large amount of memory. (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)
* Many other minor improvements. (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux)

Resolved incompatibilities:
* On some computers, when performing the system encryption pretest, Windows failed to display the log-on screen. This will no longer occur. (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)

Bug fixes:
* On some systems, drive letters were not correctly assigned to newly mounted non-system volumes. This will no longer occur. (Windows)
* Many other minor bug fixes. (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux)

Wie auf Heise zu lesen ist birgt die Verwendung des Hibernate-Modus offenbar ein Risiko, da hier das im Arbeitsspeicher hinterlegte Passwort für die Verschlüsselung ausgelesen werden könne.

* Edge enhancement, which adjusts the level of sharpness of video content

Note: To turn off De-noise, you must drag the De-noise slider completely to the left (with a value of 0), followed by placing a check mark in the Enable check-box.

The new slider controls can be found in the All Settings page of the Avivo Video tab found in the Catalyst™ Control Center.

ATI Catalyst™ driver: Tessellation support

This release of Catalyst™ introduces Tessellation support in the Catalyst™ driver for the ATI Radeon™ HD 3800 Series of products. Tessellation has the potential to simplify development efforts and improve application performance by creating high polygon models from low polygon models all within the GPU.

• Pipelined operations increasing read/write speed by up to 100% (Windows)


• Mac OS X version


• Graphical user interface for the Linux version of TrueCrypt


• XTS mode of operation, which was designed by Phillip Rogaway in 2003 and which was recently approved as the IEEE 1619 standard for cryptographic protection of data on block-oriented storage devices. XTS is faster and more secure than LRW mode (for more information on XTS mode, see the section Modes of Operation in the documentation).

  Note: New volumes created by this version of TrueCrypt can be encrypted only in XTS mode. However, volumes created by previous versions of TrueCrypt can still be mounted using this version of TrueCrypt.



• SHA-512 hash algorithm (replacing SHA-1, which is no longer available when creating new volumes).

  Note: To re-encrypt the header of an existing volume with a header key derived using HMAC-SHA-512 (PRF), select 'Volumes' > 'Set Header Key Derivation Algorithm'.

Improvements, bug fixes, and security enhancements:

• The Linux version of TrueCrypt has been redesigned so that it will no longer be affected by changes to the Linux kernel (kernel upgrades/updates).

MultiView™
Catalyst 8.1 introduces MultiView™ support. This feature provides for hardware accelerated OpenGL rendering across multiple graphics adapters. MultiView™ will provide hardware accelerated 3D rendering in a system containing multiple graphics cards on an extended desktop arrangement. This feature will allow for the rendering performance and additional frame buffer resources to be evenly shared with the second and third graphics adapters. This allows for a 3D applica- tion to have the same performance running on a secondary or third display device as if it were running on the primary display device. This feature will be supported under Windows XP (32 and 64 bit versions), Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit ver- sions), and the Linux operating system.

ATI’s Folding@Home
Folding@Home is a distributed computing project designed by the Stanford Uni- versity. The application performs intensive simulations of protein folding. This simulation will help researchers uncover how certain diseases develop. Fold- ing@Home uses distributed computing to simulate protein folding, the workload is broken up into small work units and distributed across hundreds of thousands of computers over the internet. You can help find the cure to many different diseases!

Zwar bietet er noch keinen 3D-Support, unterstützt aber mittlerweile offiziell die Grafikchips ATI RV505, RV515, RV516, R520, RV530, RV535, RV570, R580, RS690, R600, RV610 und RV620. Der RV670 (Radeon HD 3800) wurde noch nicht getestet.

AMD plant außerdem weitere Spezifikationen zu veröffentlichen und hat zu diesem Zweck sogar neue Mitarbeiter angestellt. Zu AMD gewechselt ist auch Alex Deucher, der am xf86-video-ati Treiber mitgearbeitet hat. Ab Dezember wird er für AMD an der Open-Source Treiberentwicklung arbeiten.

  • Thanks to a patch from Intel, the Bonjour prpl now supports file transfers using XEP-0096 and XEP-0065. This should enable file transfers between libpurple clients and Gajim clients, but will not work with iChat or Adium as they use a different file transfer implementation.
  • XMPP password changes that return errors no longer cause the saved password to be changed.
  • XMPP file transfer support has been enhanced to support sending files through a proxy when the server supports discovering a a bytestream proxy. This should make file transfers much more reliable. The next release will add support for manually specifying a proxy when the server doesn't advertise one.

  • If a plugin says it can't be unloaded, we now display an error and remove the plugin from the list of saved plugins so it won't load at the next startup. Previously, we were ignoring this case, which could lead to crashes.
  • Connection errors are now reported in mini-dialogs inside the buddy list, rather than as buttons in the buddy list and with dialog boxes. If several accounts are disabled when you sign on elsewhere, you can now re-enable them all with a single click.
  • Added tooltips to the Room List window to show full topics
  • Added buttons in preferences to access GNOME network and browser preferences configuration dialogs when running under GNOME
  • If you alias a buddy to an alias that is already present within a particular group, we now offer to merge the buddies into the same contact.

  • Added a 'Move to' menu in buddy list context menu for moving buddies to other groups as an alternative to dragging.
  • Group headings are now marked via an underline instead of a different color background.
  • It is now possible to mark a chat on your buddy list as "Persistent" so you do not leave the chat when the window or tab is closed.

The SeaMonkey name was adopted by the project leading group (dubbed "SeaMonkey Council") after considering a long list of community-proposed names - it was decided that the long-lived internal code name still suited the project best. It was no easy decision, but it has a certain appeal - the suite is already known by SeaMonkey within the developer community. The council is working on having this name trademarked with the help of the Mozilla Foundation.

While the Foundation doesn't consider the new SeaMonkey application to be an officially supported upgrade path for Mozilla suite users, it provides the newly founded project with assistance in the form of much-needed project infrastructure, and cooperates with SeaMonkey developers. Development of SeaMonkey produces many improvements which are contributed back to the Mozilla codebase, much of which is shared with products including Firefox and Thunderbird.

Avivo Video Converter for Windows Vista (64-bit)

This release of Catalyst™ introduces the Avivo Video Converter for the Windows Vista (64 bit) operating system. The Avivo Video Converter is a transcoder tool that provides a quick and easy way of converting videos from one format to another. The Avivo Video Converter found within the Catalyst™ Control Center, allows the user to select the input file, and output format, along with the quality level and file location. The Avivo. Video Converter accepts a wide variety of file formats as a source, and outputs to file formats such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4/DivX, WMA, H.264/AVC and more.

Catalyst Control Center: Color Temperature Control

This release of Catalyst™ introduces Color Temperature Control within the Catalyst Control Center, allowing users to adjust the chromatic level shown on their display. Supported on the ATI Radeon™ X1000 Series and Radeon™ HD 2000 Series of products.

Performance Improvements

The following performance improvements are noticed with Catalyst™ 7.9:

• Far Cry performance improves up to 14 % on the ATI Radeon™ HD2900XT CrossFire™, ATI Radeon™ HD2600XT single card, and ATI Radeon™ HD2400XT CrossFire™ configurations
• Call of Duty 2 performance improves as much as 12% with Anti-Aliasing enabled on the ATI Radeon™ HD2600XT CrossFire™ and single card configurations
• Half-Life 2: Episode 1 performance improves at most 9% on ATI Radeon™ HD2600XT CrossFire™ and as much as 6% on the ATI Radeon™ HD2400XT CrossFire™ configurations.
• Serious Sam 2 performance improves up to 46% on the ATI Radeon™ HD2400XT CrossFire™ and up to 27% on the ATI Radeon™ HD2600XT single card and CrossFire™ configurations with Anti-Aliasing enabled.
• Quake 4 performance with Anti-Aliasing improves 9% or more on the ATI Radeon™ X1600/X1650Pro and ATI Radeon™ X1300/X1550 products in both single and CrossFire™ configurations.

We're proud to announce: version 1.5!

We have to admit, it was delayed a few times, mostly because we always had some new feature we wanted to implement in mind, but now it's finally here: we're proud to announce the availability of Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5. This new version features a lot of improved detection mechanisms (which in parts were already made available through the regular 1.4 updates in the past months), improved Operating System support (Windows Vista integration, restored support for Windows 95, more compatibility with Wine, support for bootable Windows CDs), improved browser support (e.g. for immunization) and much more - you can find an overview of noticable changes and some screenshots here.

Downloads will be made available throughout the next days, and we'll try to keep the download mirror list up-to-date with who already has this newest version.

What's new in Version 2.1?

The following is a list of exciting improvements introduced in Foxit Reader 2.1.

New features:

• Form Designer:With new form designer, you are able to add push buttons, text fields, check boxes, combo boxes, list boxes or radio buttons to an interactive PDF form and specify their properties. Besides the form design feature, it also contains all features of Foxit Reader Pro Pack. You still can use those features under evaluation mode. But evaluation marks will be added to the top-right corner of the saved pages. If you purchase the license of Foxit PDF Form Designer, you will be able to get rid of the evaluation mark.
• Measure Tools:This set of tools, including a distance tool, a perimeter tool, and an area tool, will help you to measure distance, perimeter or area on a PDF page and automatically transform the results into real-world values.
• Image Tool:Now you can specify a rectangle on any part of a PDF page and then insert an image into that rectangle.
• Link Tools:You may now add rectangle or quadrilateral links to a PDF file and specify their destination, which can be a page view, a named destination, an external file, or a web page.
• Loupe Tool:This special magnifying glass enables you to take a closer look at any part of a PDF page that is beneath the mouse cursor. The magnifying factor of the loupe tool can be adjusted.
• File Attachment Tool:Now you may attach any type of external files as attachments or comments to a PDF file. You may define the opening behaviors when these comments are clicked.
• Annotation Selection Tool:This tool allows you to select multiple annotations and then move, resize or align them together.
• Transparent Annotation:Now you can make annotations transparent and specify their opacity.
• Reading History:After you read a PDF file to a certain point and then close it, you would like Foxit Reader to remember that certain point and next time, when re-opening the same file, jump directly to that point. Version 2.1 makes this possible and allows you to specify the number of files whose closing point will be remembered.
• E-mail the PDF:Now when you read a PDF file, you can easily send it as an email attachment to someone else.
• Spell Checker:When you fill out an English form or use typewriter to insert any English text, this tool will try to find any spelling errors and highlight them with squiggly lines. If you right click on the misspelled words, you will see a list of suggested words. This feature is available only to users who purchase Pro Pack and requires downloading of an extra add-on, which is the lexical dictionary. Click here to know more about spell checker.

Enhanced features:

• Zoom Tools:Combined with different mouse operations, this new set of zoom tools brings more convenience to users. If you click on a page, then the tool will zoom in/out on the page, trying to keep the clicked point as the center of the window. If you drag a rectangle on the page and then release the mouse, then the tool will zoom in/out on the page, trying to keep the rectangle as the center of the window. If you press the Ctrl key while scrolling the mouse wheel, then the tool will zoom in/out on page based on the scrolling direction.
• Renovated IE Plug-in:In previous versions, IE plug-in has very limited functionality. The new IE plug-in of Version 2.1 has almost all the capabilities of the main program, including form filler, annotation tools, JavaScript support, import/export feature, save as function, etc.
• Improved Printing:Sometimes, you want to print out annotations only, without the actual content of the PDF document. This is possible now in Version 2.1. Also, Version 2.1 will remember the last setting of printing preference.
• Enhanced Permission Control:Version 2.1 respects permission defined in a PDF file and control whether printing, saving, form filling or editing is allowed.
• Built-in JavaScript Engine:A totally new JavaScript engine, that supports document level operations, has been built into Version 2.1 and doesn't need to be downloaded as an extra add-on any more.
• Multi-language Input:Version 2.1 has better support for multi-language input, especially for Japanese language.
• Improved Typewriter:Typewriter now is more stable and supports more fonts.
• Better Full Screen Mode:Now for the full screen mode, you can choose to hide or display the menu, scrolling bars, bookmark pane, exit button, and specify the background color.
