ReactOS ist ein Open-Source-Projekt, welches sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, ein freies Betriebssystem zu entwickeln, welches kompatibel zur Windows-NT-Linie, also zu Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP, 2003 und Vista ist. Der Fokus liegt dabei derzeit auf Windows 2000. Kompatibilität bedeutet hierbei, dass sowohl Treiber als auch Programme, die für die NT-Linie entwickelt wurden, unter ReactOS laufen sollen. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, arbeitet man u. a. relativ eng mit den Projekten Wine und Samba-TNG zusammen.
Die Geschichte von ReactOS reicht bis 1996 zurück, die eigentliche Entwicklung begann 1998 und seit ca. 2002 geht es in größeren Schritten voran.
Anfang 2006 geriet das Projekt in die Schlagzeilen, als einige Entwickler andere Entwickler beschuldigten, bei der Nachbildung von Windows unerlaubte Wege zu gehen, wie bspw. das Abschreiben vom geleakten Windows-Quellcode oder das Übernehmen von Assemblercode.
Als Konsequenz verließen einige Entwickler das Team, die Bedingungen zur Aufnahme in das Team wurden verschärft und eine öffentliche Überprüfung des kompletten Quellcodes wurde gestartet. Diese Überprüfung ist inzwischen zu ca. 95% abgeschlossen und hat bisher keine Spuren von Copyrightverletzungen finden können. Auch das Wine-Projekt prüft derzeit seinen kompletten Quellcode, da das aber nicht öffentlich getan wird, ist über die bisherigen Ergebnisse nichts bekannt.

Version 0.3.1, welche nach Aussagen der Entwickler relativ bald erscheinen soll, wird möglicherweise einen neuen Cache Manager enthalten. Mit diesem soll die Kompatibilität zu Windows-Programmen und vor allem -Treibern stark steigen. So soll es u. a. erstmals möglich sein, den Windows NTFS-Treiber unter ReactOS zu verwenden.
Auch an der Multiuser-Fähigkeit wird gearbeitet. Version 0.3.1 wird voraussichtlich erstmals ein Authentifizierungssystem enthalten.

LG3D-LiveCD 2.4-test1

LG3D-LiveCD 2.4-test1 basiert auf Slax 5.1.0 (früher Slackware) und verwendet das Sun Microsystem Projekt Looking Glass - eine auf Java basierende Technik, die genutzt wird, um eine Desktopoberfläche mit 3D-Elementen zu schaffen. Das aktuelle Testrelease kann aber unter Umständen mit Grafikkarten von NVIDIA Probleme verursachen.

Spielen unter Linux ist nicht?
