CRAY DEBUTS AMD EPYC‚ĄĘ PROCESSORS IN SUPERCOMPUTER PRODUCT LINE

SEATTLE, April 18, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) ‚ÄĒ Glo¬≠bal super¬≠com¬≠pu¬≠ter lea¬≠der Cray Inc. (Nasdaq:CRAY) today announ¬≠ced it has added AMD EPYC‚ĄĘ pro¬≠ces¬≠sors to its Cray¬ģ CS500‚ĄĘ pro¬≠duct line. To meet the gro¬≠wing needs of high-per¬≠for¬≠mance com¬≠pu¬≠ting (HPC), the com¬≠bi¬≠na¬≠ti¬≠on of AMD EPYC‚ĄĘ 7000 pro¬≠ces¬≠sors with the Cray CS500 clus¬≠ter sys¬≠tems offers Cray cus¬≠to¬≠mers a fle¬≠xi¬≠ble, high-den¬≠si¬≠ty sys¬≠tem tun¬≠ed for their deman¬≠ding envi¬≠ron¬≠ments. The powerful plat¬≠form lets orga¬≠niza¬≠ti¬≠ons tack¬≠le a broad ran¬≠ge of HPC workloads wit¬≠hout the need to rebuild and recom¬≠pi¬≠le their x86 applications.

‚ÄúCray‚Äôs decis¬≠i¬≠on to offer the AMD EPYC pro¬≠ces¬≠sors in the Cray CS500 pro¬≠duct line expands its mar¬≠ket oppor¬≠tu¬≠ni¬≠ties by offe¬≠ring buy¬≠ers an important new choice,‚ÄĚ said Ste¬≠ve Con¬≠way, seni¬≠or vice pre¬≠si¬≠dent of rese¬≠arch at Hype¬≠ri¬≠on Rese¬≠arch. ‚ÄúThe AMD EPYC pro¬≠ces¬≠sors are express¬≠ly desi¬≠gned to pro¬≠vi¬≠de high¬≠ly sca¬≠lable, ener¬≠gy- and cost-effi¬≠ci¬≠ent per¬≠for¬≠mance in lar¬≠ge and midran¬≠ge clusters.‚ÄĚ

The Cray CS500 systems with AMD EPYC processors also come with Cray’s software programing environment. Cray has integrated and optimized the Cray Programming Environment and libraries to enhance AMD EPYC processor performance.

‚ÄúOur decis¬≠i¬≠on to offer AMD EPYC pro¬≠ces¬≠sors in our CS500 pro¬≠duct line is emble¬≠ma¬≠tic of Cray‚Äôs com¬≠mit¬≠ment to the com¬≠mu¬≠ni¬≠ty to deli¬≠ver a com¬≠pre¬≠hen¬≠si¬≠ve line of high-den¬≠si¬≠ty sys¬≠tems with an opti¬≠mi¬≠zed pro¬≠g¬≠ra¬≠ming envi¬≠ron¬≠ment to deli¬≠ver the requi¬≠red per¬≠for¬≠mance and sca¬≠la¬≠bi¬≠li¬≠ty,‚ÄĚ said Fred Kohout, seni¬≠or vice pre¬≠si¬≠dent of pro¬≠ducts and chief mar¬≠ke¬≠ting offi¬≠cer at Cray.

‚ÄúCray‚Äôs lea¬≠der¬≠ship in super¬≠com¬≠pu¬≠ting is well known and AMD is thril¬≠led to be working with them on the CS500 clus¬≠ter sys¬≠tem,‚ÄĚ said Scott Aylor, cor¬≠po¬≠ra¬≠te vice pre¬≠si¬≠dent and gene¬≠ral mana¬≠ger, dat¬≠a¬≠cen¬≠ter and embedded solu¬≠ti¬≠ons, AMD. ‚ÄúCray is the first sys¬≠tem ven¬≠dor to offer an opti¬≠mi¬≠zed pro¬≠gramming envi¬≠ron¬≠ment for AMD EPYC pro¬≠ces¬≠sors, which is a distinct advan¬≠ta¬≠ge. Com¬≠bi¬≠ning AMD EPYC pro¬≠ces¬≠sors with Cray‚Äôs super¬≠com¬≠pu¬≠ting exper¬≠ti¬≠se opens new oppor¬≠tu¬≠ni¬≠ties for both com¬≠pa¬≠nies to grow.‚ÄĚ

The Cray CS500 cluster systems with AMD EPYC 7000 processors provide four dual-socket nodes in a 2U chassis, each node supporting two (2) PCIe Gen3 x 16 slots (200Gb network capability) and HDD/SSD options. AMD EPYC 7000 processors support up to 32 cores and eight DDR4 memory channels per socket. The CS500 line will also include a 2U chassis with one node for large memory configurations, visualization, and service node functionality to complement the compute node form factor.

The Cray CS500 sys¬≠tem with AMD EPYC pro¬≠ces¬≠sors will be gene¬≠ral¬≠ly available in sum¬≠mer 2018.
