Intel to Invest $3.5 Billion to Expand New Mexico Manufacturing Operations
What’s New:
Intel Corporation will invest $3.5 billion to equip its New Mexico operations for the manufacturing of advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, including Foveros, Intel’s breakthrough 3D packaging technology. The multiyear investment is expected to create at least 700 high-tech jobs and 1,000 construction jobs and support an additional 3,500 jobs in the state. Planning activities begin immediately, with construction expected to start in late 2021.
“A key differentiator for our IDM 2.0 strategy is our unquestioned leadership in advanced packaging, which allows us to mix and match compute tiles to deliver the best products. We’re seeing tremendous interest in these capabilities from the industry, especially following the introduction of our new Intel Foundry Services. Intel verhandelt über CPU-Fremdfertigung
Intels 10-nm-Desaster ist noch nicht vom Tisch, da gehen zwei Konkurrenten in der Chipfertigung in die Risiko-Produktion mit 5 nm. Letzte Woche hatte daher schon Third Point, ein großer Anteilseigner bei Intel, die Forderung auf den Plan gesetzt, zumindest eine externe Fertigung zu prüfen, um im Wettbewerb gegen AMD nicht vollends abgehängt zu werden. Globalfoundries vor Expansion und Beteiligung durch Samsung?
Über Globalfoundries wurde bei uns schon länger nicht mehr berichtet, nachdem AMD immer mehr Chips beim Konkurrenten TSMC fertigen lässt. Die ehemaligen Fabriken von AMD und IBM und fertigen heute vor allem Chips für AI und Automotive-Kunden. Nach dem 14-nm-Prozess wurde die feinste Fertigungsstufe mit 12 nm schon von Samsung lizensiert. Die geplante Fertigung mit einer Strukturbreite von 7 nm gestrichen.
